My boyfrind's sister's beagle is called Rodney! Suits hom to a tea - I'm sure she won't mind if you borrow it.
I personally like - Homer, Mozzarella, Elvis, Elwood.
Alternatively, of you're going for the King Arthur theme - Arthur, Archimedes, Concord, Patsy, Lancelot

Wort is the nickname Merlin assigned to Arthur as a young boy.
I think that would make a good name for Merlin's side-kick.

I know someone who named their Beagle "Darwin" for the (evolution theory guy) Charles Darwin - who traveled on a ship named the Beagle. That was clever & cute!
If you are looking to keep a theme of magicians/illusionists, how about "Houdini" - Beagles tend to be good escape artists (hope your yard has a secure fence)!

It would help to know if your dog is male or female... so I'll share a site that will help you choose your own pet name.
Choose dog or cat, male or female.... then you can choose a category of names based on "personality", "appearance", "nature" etc.
