Another term for an electro-acoustic is semi-acoustic guitar.
A semi acoustic guitar includes a sound box and one or more pickups.
Semi-acoustic instruments divide into two types:
In some, the sound box is adequate for performance in its own right, and use of a pickup is optional as an alternative to using a microphone. Some manufacturers refer to these as acoustic electric rather than semi-acoustic instruments, but the terminology varies.
More often, the instrument is designed primarily to be used with an amplifier, and the sound box is used primarily to produce an amplified tone not obtainable with a solid body instrument.
A pickup device acts as a transducer that captures mechanical vibrations (usually from suitably equipped stringed instruments such as the electric guitar, electric bass guitar or electric violin) and converts them to an electronic signal which can be amplified and recorded.

Acoustic-electric guitars are great to have. You can use them in small or large groups, at a campfire or in an auditorium.
On-board pickups come in various setups. Usually, you can spot the pickup controls on the top bout. Others are located inside the box and have a 9-volt battery giving it power for amplification. Other amplifications are made with an under-the-saddle pickup or a soundhole removable pickup.
To get an acoustic amplification, insist upon an acoustic amplifier. There are many good brands of acoustic amps. Should you choose a regular electric guitar amplifier, you'll get brassy, sharp sounds rather than the mellow acoustics you'd prefer.
Happy upcoming birthday!

It is an acoustic guitar with a built in pick up hidden inside, so you can play amplified without a microphone. You do still need an amplifier, unless you want to play as an acoustic. I think they work fine for steel string guitars, but I am not so pleased with my nylon string one. If you play nylon (classical) I would suggest you get one with a nice tone, and amplify it through a good microphone.

A pick up is a little microphone specifacally for your guitar. They're usually behind where you'd strum.
Yes, you'd need an amp to hear the guitar through it.

Acoustic-Electric guitars can be played with or without an amp. They go both ways (so to speak).
