What causes the gritty stuff found in the corners of your eyes in the morning when you wake up/?

While you are sleeping your eyes build up fluid from the tear ducts to keep your eyes clean and get rid of any dirt in them. This fluid has no where to go so it collects at the corrner of your eyes and drys up, then you (hopefully) clean it out in the morning.

Mucus pushing out all the foriegn objects that get in your eyes.
