Maybe they are only in the south, but every once in a while, I see large orange and black ants. There's just usually one of them. Where's the rest? Anybody know?

Velvet ants live in semi-arid and arid places from "California to Nevada and south to Mexico."
Cow killers live in totally opposite areas as you will find here.
What you saw is a "Cow killer." We have them where I live. It is very easy to identify one. This insect is bright red on the thorax and abdomen as you look down from above and if you turn it over with a stick, it is black underneath. Males have wings and females are wingless. Adults drink nectar. The babies eat bumblebee larvae. They are generally located around meadows, forest edges and clover fields. I usually see them at an open field near a cold water creek at the edge of the forest. It is "called a "Cow killer" because the pain from the sting is said to be so bad as to bring down a cow."

For ants on the counter top, wipe down counter top with white vinegar. To prevent ants from coming into the house, or getting into cupboards, sprinkle dried mint or red pepper where they are entering the house and in the cupboards. If you know where the anthills are make a mixture of 50 percent borax (sold in laundry aisle of supermarkets) and 50 percent confectioner's sugar and place near anthill. The ants are attracted to the sugar and carry the fatal borax/sugar combination back to the nest to feed the queen and other ants. Soon all ants will be dead. I know you have children and pets but if you can put this in an area where the children and pets ca't ingest it, it should solve your ant problem. To get rid of anthills, pour 3 gallons of boiling water down them. This is best when done when the ants are active and at the surface. Do not do it near flowers or they will die.

Yeah those are called velvet ants, usually the males are harmless but the females are have stingers on them, notice how they are hard to kill, i really dont know if they have a hive or a nest, but i do know that they are solitary. Thats actually a good question. Look it up!

I think you are talking about a "velvet ant" they are actually a wingless wasp or in the same family and they don't get along with each other

Wow! A "Cow Killer"!

Thanks for the question. Fascinating!

"The good news is they are solitary and do not exhibit social behavior." (Ref. 1)
