I want to stay at a cool place in NYC, that is not anywhere the tourist traps. I hated the DoubleTree at Time Square. I heard SOHO or East Village is fun. Any Suggestions?

Sounds like you don't need to stay at the Plaza Hotel or the Waldorf Astoria. Here are some cool smaller hotels for you.

-Dylan Hotel. It is a small boutique hotel in Midtown. Saw the daughter of Ralph Lauren here.
-Exchange Hotel, formerly Manhattan Seaport Suites, next to South Street Seaport near Wall Street and NYSE.
-SoHo Grand Hotel, owned by pet-food maker Hartz Mountain. (And yes, dogs and cats are welcome; they even receive perks such as body pillows.) Hangout of many celebrities and fashionistas.
-Tribeca Hotel, an abundance of empty space that you'll wonder is probably a waste of space, but is also rare in Manhattan. The atrium lounge and adjacent bar are popular gathering spots.
