I'm in the market for a smaller SUV, but don't want to give up my luxury. I no longer need that 3rd row seat, but like I said, I still want to ride in style. I don't want the hybrid, because have heard they're lots of trouble... Would like any input on this you all have.

Mercury Mariner, Ford Escape, & Mazda Tribute are all virtually the same vehicles with cosmetic differences.
You shouldn't rule out the Hybrids though.
My last Demo ( I sell cars & therefore drive a dealer Demo) was a Hybrid Escape & I loved everything about it.! Of course it was loaded with every option I could get, & quite luxurious. Somebody bought it, so I am driving something different ( mostly high end trade-ins) every day untill we get another loaded Hybrid in .

If you still are afraid to buy a hybrid (although you shouldn't be) I also highly recommend the Mariner, Tribute & Escape.
They are all great, fun to drive, reliable, come with excellent warranties, are available in an assortment of trim levels & options & color combos. I've had about 18 Escapes as demo's & I love them.

If you happen to be located in the Chicagoland area look me up & I'll be happy to show you around the vehicle.

btw I'm probably the LEAST high pressure sales person you'll ever meet in your life & that's what makes me so good at it.

The Mercury Mariner is a great small SUV. It is the same as the Ford Escape but with more bells and whistles. The Hybrid Version, which I am Certified to work on is also a great version and buy.
The myths you have heard about Hybrids are untrue. Yes there are a few differences and SAFETY concerns when working on a HYBRID, But overall they are Safe vehicles. Just do not let your average untrained Mechanic work on it, They could get hurt or even killed if they are not aware that there is 400 volts running in the vehicle.Even when doing brake work!
Any ORANGE wire in a Hybrid can kill you.
ALWAYS disable the HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM before working on it. Do not let the myths deter you from buying a Hybrid Vehicle.

I know people who have the Escape and Tribute, basically the same car and say that Mercury is more luxurious. Good car.
