have you ever been to the doctor because of this?
It depends what you mean exactly by constipation; some people can go for 4-5 days without passing faeces and be perfectly normal. Everybody is different in this respect and if there is no discomfort or pain you shouldnt worry too much. Some people are known to suffer from an idiopathic slow transit time - meaning that the bowels take longer to push the stools around.

However if you find that you cannot pass faeces at all without a laxative and you are suffering from abdominal discomfort, bloathing, pain and nausea then i suggest you see a doctor. It might be simply that you could need a change of diet. A doctor can order some tests such as an abdominal and pelvic x-ray, an abdominal ultrasound, a barium enema and a colonoscopy to find out what is causing this constipation.

Causes of constipation range considerably and include irritable bowel syndrome, not enough exercise, hypothyroidism and even depression. Are you taking any drugs that might be effecting you?

A doctor will probably prescribe a stronger laxative then you can get from over the counter, or an enema. Natural remedies you can try include regular daily exercise, drinking at least 2 litres of water daily (dehydration promotes constipation), and eating lots of fibre.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome - It can be caused from many different things like stress in your life, poor diet, food allergies. Not all food allergies give you hives and a closed throat. Some do not allow you to properly digest your food when you eat them. I have had the problem since I was little too and for the last 3 weeks I have seen a natural doctor and have found these type of allergies and have ommitted them from my diet (not completely, I get 3 meals a week where I can have them) and it has helped. I have tried all different kinds of laxatives, metamucil and Zelnorm with no help.

You may need more fibre than you realize. Keep track of how many grams of fibre you eat in a day, it's easy with the nutrition labels on almost all foods. For items that don't have a label, like fruits and veg, there's an awesome website called calorieking.com that lists the nutritional breakdown of many foods. Bowel buddy cookies work wonders, also bran cereal and bran bars. Avocado is high fibre too! Also, some exercise, like walking may help move things along. Good Luck to you!

It sounds like Crone's Disease, which I have, but I'm not a doctor. However, certain foods can set it off - I suggest you get to your doctor, explain how long you've had this, and get him to recommend a GastroIntestinal specialist (look out for the colonoscopy!) to diagnose and manage the problem. It is not normal to be continually constipated, but it can easily be handled once you know the reason. Don't keep taking laxatives - they're addictive and eventually your digestive system won't bother working at all...not to mention that your condition can probably be controlled properly with the help of your doctor.

There can be many reasons but the worst thing you can do is to continue trying to cure yourself. Go see a doctor and get a detailed follow up. The body is like a swiss watch. If you drink too much water, you go to the bathroom. If you dont drink, your mouth gets dry and you want something to drink.

Your absorbing more moisture thru your intestines and that is what causes constipation, so, go see a doctor and get a good check up. Can be something simple and fixed easy. Dont drag your feet and wait any longer.

I believe this site could be the answer you've been looking for. I hope you aren't easily grossed out because there are some pretty intense graphics. Today is my first day on the program so I don't have any personal testimony but I'm sure the ones from the web-site will be enough. Hope this helps!

You need to see a gastroenterologist. Laxatives are habit forming and you need to break the habit. Stool softeners and 8 glasses of water a day should help.
