He said that Eve's eyes would be opened, and that she would know good and evil, "like God."

In other words, Satan was promising Eve that she could be like God. Satan was lying in two ways:

1) God does not know evil. He knows OF it, but he does not know it, never having been it.

2) Satan was saying that Eve could be "more than human," which was offering a "gift" that wasn't his to offer...and which was outright deceitful. He fanned the flames of her personal vanity, which led to her downfall. For, arguably, it is pride that separated humans from God. Just as it was pride that separated Lucifer from God.

The serpent was speaking to Eve, and said, that her eyes would be open. Her mind and that of Adam's became aware of the physical and material world. Not long after this unfortunate incident in vs. 7 it says,"And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked..." In vs. 8; " the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

He (God) asked them where they were, they said they were hiding and were afraid because they were naked.

Hope this answers your question.

Eve's eyes.

Specifically, Satan was telling a half-truth there... indeed Adam's and Eve's eyes were indeed opened, and realized that "good" = "obedience to God" and "evil" = "disobedience to God".

Since at that time, God had made no law against lying to Adam and Eve, when Eve lied (something we now know to be evil), it was not counted against her. She had no knowledge of lying, nor had a law against it been spoken of.

However, God *had* made a law against eating the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. Honestly, it didn't need to be a fruit... it could have been said, "Thou shalt not swim in the pond of knowledge of good and evil" or "Thou shalt not throw the stick of knowledge of good and evil". The fact is, is that "good" is obeying God, and "evil" is breaking the laws that He has passed. The law was set, and as long as they obeyed it, they knew only "good". Once they broke it, they remembered what "good" was like, and now knew what "evil" was.

And certainly, they did not physically die... right then and there, that is... but there was a spiritual death, a seperation from them and God, resulting in the seperation from mankind as a whole from God. Physical death also began then. I have heard it said that, "We begin dying from the moment we are born". I tend to disagree. I believe that once we become fully adults, around the age of 20 or so, when moral, hormonal, and all other pubescent variables all level out into adulthoodness, and we are at the very peak of our individual existances... almost akin to Adam's and Eve's physical perfection... it is then we begin dying.

In a way... what the serpent said was indeed true, albeit only partially... and a partial truth is just as devastating as a bold-faced lie.

eyes: In Hebrew, from which this is translated, it can mean:
1) Physical eyes.
2) as showing mental qualities
3) of mental and spiritual faculties (fig.)
4) a spring, fountain
Therefore, the passage can be translated, "“God knows that when you eat of it (the tree of knowledge) your mental and spiritual faculties will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Interpretively: The knowledge that Wisdom wanted to teach over time, was to be known experientially by a man in disobedience and disqualifying himself from communion with his creator.
