One of my friends bought an Escort a couple of years ago which had been a rental. It was cheap and with low miles. He got a great deal and the car was well kept and reliable.
I bought a car from a "family or friend". "driven from old lady to church", or "dealer who would never lie" and got a piece of trash.
It si a question of luck. You can buy the car from your neighbour across the street, but you never know what you buy and he can always say, It has never happened to me.

Rental agencies always maintain their vehicles well, so it's a good place to buy. MOST people who rent cars drive them gently. It's rare that they get abused.
The only downside is they usually have mostly plain-Jane cars like Luminas.

I once drove a rental car up a mountain over unpaved, very rocky roads and I had to pour dirty stream water in the radiator because it overheated. It was a brand new luxury car. Would you treat your own car like that?

Personally, I wouldn't. Not saying that everyone who has rented the car was irresponsible with it, but I would think at least a few customers beat the hell out of it.
What I would worry about is the car having little to no external problems, but having a bad engine or transmission.

i would not buy rental car with lots of miles.most rental customers we expericene have bad driving experience such as shift gears in the wrong places, careless, clumpsy, put in park while vehicle is moving, urine on the interior.when vehicles have alot of miles, expect oil leak, electrical problem, and transmission problem.

Well personally I would never do it. Think about it..you have no idea how the people who rented that car drove it. You have no idea what kinds of problems you're getting yourself into with it. People tend to be more careless with rental cars than they would be with their own, they don't care how rough they drive it because hey, it's not theirs.

If you are given the chance to check them out, drive them, and even take them to a mechanic to have them checked over, it would probably be ok, but not if you can't at least do all of those things.
