Tom promised Becky that if he was able to finish medical school, then he'd marry her. Tom ended up dropping out of medical school, but he married Becky anyway. Did Tom keep his promise?

Please state whether you are an atheist or a believer in God when you answer. Thanks.

old school: Vows, promises, oaths, and covenants have a great deal to do with some people's religions. However, in this case, I was still testing the logic.

I'm an atheist. I thought you were talking about Sawyer and Thatcher, and just spent a few minutes trying desperately to remember what he promised her.

Tom kept the spirit of the promise.

Tom's promise was void when he dropped out.

Therefore he couldn't keep OR break a promise that no longer applied.

PS: for a guy who is trying to lecture the board about logic, I think you should realize that there are many people who are neither "Atheist" nor "Believer" yet you talk as though these were the only option.

PPS: I'm agnostic.

No he did not keep his promise because his promise was..If I am able to finish medical school then I will marry you, but he did not finish medical school, and although he did marry her he did not keep his initial promise of finishing medical school. There are 2 parts to his promise...Finishing of med school and getting married. The only way for that promise to be fullfilled is if both parts of the equation are accurate. If he would have said I am going to try to finish medical school but I promise i will marry you anyways then he would have. I am an Athiest.

The promise did not cover what would happen if he *didn't* drop out. The promise only covered if he finished.

The only way to break this promise is to finish, then NOT marry.

So, he did not break the promise.

I'm neither Theist nor atheist.

Atheist here.

Once Tom dropped out of school, he voided any contract. thus, he cannot break or keep that contract. So, he's in the clear.

Yes. The gist of the promise is that he would marry her. He simply put a condition upon the time frame.

Promises are for people who break their word.
