I've been feeding my dog Canidae, it was good, but he has allergies and Canidae has a lot of different ingredients. I changed to eagle pack (fish), to isolate some ingredients and he was doing good. He's been getting itchy again.

Recently I went on vacation and his caretaker gave him pedigree because she ran outta the food I gave her. I picked him up yesterday and she told me she had to buy some food. I had a bad feeling about feeding him something different. So he could be itchy because of the pedigree or he could have developed allergies from the eagle pack.

Do you know which ingredient your dog is allergic to? If you know that, the rest will be easy. Here is how to find out. The number 1 thing in the diet that dogs are allergic to is wheat, followed in order by corn, beef, and chicken. The way to find out is to start with wheat and feed a diet that is wheat free for a month. You will have to read everything - food, treats, etc. It takes a month to get a food worked out of the system. If after a month you are still having problems, move on to the next item - corn and so forth. In the mean time, benadryl will help with some of the worst of the itching as will brewers yeast. When you go through the entire list, if the itching is still going on and you go to the vet, at least you have done the first things he would have you do and this will save you and your dog time and you money. Good luck

To choose a high quality commercial food, become a label reader and think "high five". The first five ingredients listed on the label will comprise the greatest amount of weight of the product. The very first ingredient must be a meat. The next four can be vegetables and whole grains (see below). A second meat in the top five is really good. What should never be in the top five are corn, wheat, soy, or any by-product. For an allergic dog I would only feed a grain-free diet. There should not be any wheat, wheat gluten, wheat meal, or anything wheat at all in the food.

You should get him allergy tested by your vet. It only costs about $150 but you can select a food that he is not allergic to. My dog also has allergies and she is on natural balance. They have an allergy formula but my dog is doing fine in the regular.

try innova, it is an all natural dog food with all natural ingrediants.
do not go with science diet as i had a sheltie that had allergies real bad with this food, not eukanuba, iams, pedigree, as it all has grain products and diseased decayed cancerous rendered euthanized animals in it and will cause you even more problems.
pedigree is not a good food to feed a dog with allergies and this could have triggered the allergy as it is full of fillers, by products and grains also.
You could go with the raw natural diet completely and this way you know what is in your dogs food. I feed the raw diet and innova when my kids have to feed my dogs.

I have used all the dog foods you have listed and my dog with food allergies had problems with both after awhile. After a good deal of research I found Royal Canin, not only do they make breed specific foods but several different allergy formulas. My dogs LOVE their food and the company has put tons of research ito their food. Check out Royal Canin USA's website it has tons of info.

First of all see a vet. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. I have a westie and he has skin allergies. The vet put him on medication which cost me $80 a month. Wow! Couldn't afford that. My sister-n-law told me that her dogs were itchy and her vet told her to get Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice Meal. So I tried it with my westie! What wonderful results! Within the week he had stopped itching and his skin had a soft pink glow, not that hot red irritated look. Give it a try. You can purchase it at Petco or I'm sure any pet store will carry it. Good Luck!

Ug, would you eat what your feeding to your dog? Or would you eat any of the junk sold at a pet shop?

Get some nice chicken breasts (or canned chicken will do), cook them up, cut or rip them into pieces. Cook up some brown rice, chop some raw veggies (broccoli and spinach are the best) and mix it all together. This is close to what your dog would eat back in the wild and is ideal for an animal with allergies.
