first off, dont buy a new car. theres TONS of cars out there with around 5k miles on them. You can often shave 20 or more percent off the price of a car, while still having the fully transferrable warrenty, and best of all, you dont have to deal with a dealer (whose JOB is to rape you of every dime and nickle).
The new honda Fits are great little cars, and hatchbacks are far more practical than sedans. My old GTi (small hatchback) has more usable hatch/trunk space and interior room than most mid sized sedans (like that mazda 6).
the toyota yaris are also wicked cars. Dont be too quick to judge and say "theyre too small." Go look at them in person and sit in one. The new Rabbit is also out now from VW. I would wait for the TDi one to come out though, as they get like 45 miles to the gallon.
edit: and cars DO NOT have black boxes in them. thats total crap. at most they could read the cars ECU data, which im not sure how much it stores.

Hyundai Sonata - 5 star safety/crash rating, Electronic stability control, 6 airbags, 100,000 mile drive train warranty and a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty, gas mileage 29 to 32 MPG, more cab space than Camery or Accord. Lists between $17,9 & $19,9. Picked mine up for $14,7. Couldn't be happier. The money I saved is huge. I was prepaid to invest over ½ of what I paid.

The new Volkswagen Rabbit is cute, fun, afforable, and powerful.
Also, the Ford Focus is nice. I had one (now my nephew & my BF's son do) and it was surprisingly powerful - the first 4 cylinder car I felt safe passing other cars with - and could turn on a dime. Great mileage, nice factory sound system. I would like to have one again - if they ever make it availible as a convertible, like they do in Europe.

Did you know that any cars built after 2001 little black boxes like airplanes? And if you get into an accident they can use it against you? Even though they dont even know how accurate they are? I know someone who died in an accident they said he was going 135 mph guess what? the car only went 100.
