There are certain inherited syndromes that predispose people to develop colon cancer, especially at an earlier age than most cases occur. If more than two first degree relatives (parent, sibling, or child) develop a colon cancer, then it is suspected that an inherited mutation may be present. If a second degree relative (grandparent or aunt/uncle or cousin), the risk is not thought to be as great.

Adding to what "Robert H" said there is also a link between colon cancer and ovarian and endometrial cancer if you have a certain gene. My father and half brother both died of colon cancer and last year I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer at age 43. This cancer is typically found in women over 70.

It can be hereditary, as both my mother and her mother were diagnosed recently. After which, my doctor advised me to have further testing, even though I'm pretty young. But I believe it has to be your mother, father, siblings, or whatnot to be concerned about inheriting the genes. So I don't think you should be worried that you're at risk, unless there's other factors.
