Thanks for all the info about going to rescues and shelters...I live in a remote area of Canada and beagles or smaller dogs don't often get turned in.

I'd recommend going to http://www.petfinder.com and clicking on "Shelter and Rescue Groups" and contacting a Beagle Rescue group near you. There are millions of great dogs out there who need homes, as opposed to paying someone to contribute to the massive pet overpopulation problem.

I would personally suggest that you contact a Beagle rescue in your area. There are so many wonderful dogs out there that need a great home. Adoption fees vary, but they should have all their vaccines, are typically spayed/neutered and are on heartworm prevention. It is much cheaper this way and you know what you are getting.

If you are still wanting a puppy, they can range from 100 dollars to 1000 or more, depending on the quality. Don't forget that puppies need to have at LEAST 2 more rounds of shots and a rabies vaccine, and must be dewormed approx. every 3-4 weeks until they are 12 weeks or so. One set of vaccines is NOT complete, nor is one or two doses of wormer. Also, if you are not breeding, figure in the cost of having them "fixed".

We suggest that you not buy a Beagle pup form a pet shop or breeder. There are dogs in shelters that need your attention and care, and can be gotten for a fraction of the cost of a pup bought from a breeder. (Some breeders charge as much as $700 to $1500 for a pup.) Keep in mind, too, that no reputable breeder would give their dogs to a pet shop to sell; so most of the pet shop dogs you see are from backyard breeders or "puppy mills" -- with little to no quality control.

Try locating an available beagle near you by going to any of the following websites:

petfinder.com
pets911.com
1-800-save-a-pet.com
nextdaypets.com

Most of these sites let you search for a dog by city and/or zip code. Most shelter dogs come vaccinated, spay/neutered, and wormed.

As the saying goes: Don't buy while shelter animals die.

It depends. If you go to a good breeder and get a health guarantee than you could pay between $700 and $1,000. If you get one from a backyard breeder or a pet store you will pay considerably less but the puppy will probably have health and behavioral issues later in life. The best suggestion I have is to either make sure you get a puppy from a responsible breeder or get on from a shelter. There are so many dogs and puppies in shelters that need good homes it seems silly to every want to buy one.

Hmm. Where I live, a purebred beagle would be anywhere from $200 - $600. They can definetly go higher. Why not save money and rescue a dog? I know others have suggested it, and I agree. It will most likely love you for life, and you could probably easily get a purebred anyway. It may be harder to find a puppy though. try www.petfinder.com

Depends on what kind and where, like from a shelter, maybe $300, from a breeder, maybe $500-$700, a show dog would be about $800-$1000.

We found our Beagle by a newspaper listing. He was born on a farm and was only $100. Best money ever spent. He is a charm!

Don't pay a breeder. Go to a shelter or rescue group.
