I am a bagel lover but I hate cream cheese so I eat em' without it (my favorites are cheddar cheese bagels and sun dried tomato ones, too).

However, one nutritionist on Morgan Spurlock's "Super Size Me" movie said that one bagel is equivalent to eating five slices of bread. Is it true that bagels are that unhealthy? I don't eat them on a regular basis.

9 out of 10 bagels on the average grocery store shelf is bad for you. It is basically the same as eating a doughnut. Just find one that is made with whole grains and real fruit and you don't have to give up your favorite fruit.

Sure look it up on the web. A good sized bagel as over 500 calories. A slice of bread has 100 or less. If you ate an extra 500 calories a day for a year you would put on 52 pounds. That is not healthy.

Bagels taste great but eat them in moderation, cutting down on some other bread for that day maybe.

The problem really is the serving size. Most people eat a bagel assuming it is one serving and it is not - - it really is equivalent to eating 5 slices of bread!! So its not neccisarily the bagel itself - but how much you eat of it. Consider for every 100 grams of most bagels there is nearly 500 calories. For a bagel - a serving size is about the size of a hockey puck . . . .how many bagels do you see that size in the store? :D

Bagels can be unhealthy. Bagels contains refined sugar which in turn gets stored as fat in your body. Try checking the nutrition labels of that particular bagel. Sometimes eating 1/2 of the bagel is one serving size. so eating the whole bagel will count as 2 servings -double the calories. If you really do enjoy them, try getting the low fat or lighter versions.

If you eat them once in a while, it should be fine and it's GREAT that you hate cream cheese because that's where the calories and fat add up. Carbs are good for you but not too many and it seems like you don't eat that many bagels. If you're really weird, try to get away from the plain and get wheat instead.

I don't think they are necessarily unhealthy but they contain alot of carbs so if weight isn't an issue then go ahead--its better than having a doughnut which contains alot more sugar--be sure to pick a whole grain bagel though!

Wait a minute. Just because a bagel is roughly equal to 5 slices of bread does not make it "unhealthy"!!
NO FOOD IS "UNHEALTHY". All things can be enjoyed IN MODERATION.
