I wanted to believe that He was doing something before He created everything. I believe that He is also NOTHING at that time. Neither He has a gender but for purposes of discussion and being the creator, allow me to use HE like how we address an inventor or creator of what we have in the world.
When God created the universe and everything that has in it, then it has everything to prove that He is recognized as much as he recognized the goodness of what He did. To simply put it in a child's mind, if we are not here, God will also be nowhere. Only from nothing can a WORD be expressed like a "big bang" for something to materialize, then everything becomes a dense visible matter to acknowledge the truth about everything coming from nothing.

God has not told us what He was doing before He created us. Do you want us to use our finite minds to try to guess about an infinite God?
God has told us that before Adam and Eve sinned, God walked and talked and had fellowship with them and that His plan is to redeem man from sin so that we can have that same relationship once again. The assumption is, then, that God created us for that purpose. Should we introduce our human emotions and desires and come up with a motivation behind God's creation of mankind (like he was "lonely" or "not getting" something)?

Time began when the time-space continuum was created.
God, living outside of time and space, does not perceive "time" like we do.
What was God doing? God was being God.
God didn't create us because he lacked something. He created us because he is a creator, and creators create. Do people write songs because they lack something? Some create songs because they are creators of songs. They put something into the world that didn't exist minutes ago. This is what the nature of creation is.
