Personality has little to do with "breed".
We suggest that you go to your local humane society and check out the cats personally. Pick one based NOT on its breed or what it looks like, but by whether or not it's personality is a match to yours.
I've adopted about 6 cats from different places, and picked each of them because they were the ones that were the most gentle and the most "purr-full" of the bunch. ((Watch out, though, for shelter cats that put their paws out to you; they're not trying the shake hands, they're trying to get you close enough to them so they can bite or scratch you.))
I guess the short answer is: MEET the cat before you commit to it. And don't buy a cat while shelter cats die.

All cats can be loving, it is not the breed, but the human parent who makes the cat loving. Go to your humane society and select a cat from the thousands that are left every year. You will be saving a life, and upon doing so, may find the most loving cat out there!

I agree. It's not necessarily the breed but how they're raised. I've had many cats that I've rescued and with love, patience and attention, they all became loving pets. However, I now have a Maine Coon cat , that I rescued from a shelter about 12 yrs. ago. She, by far, has the sweetest personality of any cat I've owned. Loving, gentle, eager to please, easy going, she lets us do anything with her. Even though she may not like it, she's never hissed or bitten when she's bathed or given a pill. She's soft and fluffy and a real pussycat!
My husband says if anything ever happens to her, we'd definitely get another coon cat. We've seen others in shelters since then, so they are available.
I've never owned a RAGDOLL but have read and heard that they are great with people! I may check out one when we get ready for another cat..
There are so many deserving, unfortunate cats in shelters, you should consider one of them. Good luck.

Moggies are really hard to beat for that. But also Maine Coons are very social that way, as are Burmese. I would go for the plain moggie though.
Rather than choosing a breed, a good way is to see litters of kittens and play with them all. Often one kitten will seem to respond to you with extra enthusiasm and that is the one you should pick - either he's extra loving or he just likes you a lot - either way you can't lose!

As I recall, Abyssinians have the most "dog-like" personality, but any cat of any breed can be extremely affectionate. They're individuals.
Consider going to http://www.petfinder.com and clicking "Shelter and Rescue Groups" in the upper right - look for cat rescue groups in your area and let them know you're looking for a very loving cat. They usually keep cats in foster-home situations, and have a better idea of their personalities and can hopefully match you up with what you're looking for.

The best cat I have ever had is a Scottish Fold. They have the best temperment I have ever seen. My sister has a maine coone cat and he is just as awesome. They are almost dogs because they are so laid back.

RAGDOLL!!! RAGDOLL!!! RAGDOLL!!!
See what you can find on the internet to read about Ragdolls. I believe they are probably the most popular "people" loving cats.
Course my little tabby would have to be the closest second.
