Because back when Religion was created, the people of thoes time had no concept of science, They would view things that happend in this world as acts of God. Ex. If a volcano erupted or a really bad flood happened, they would say it was God punishing them instead of realizing that it was a natural occurence. People used a God as a way of explaining things they did not understand or comprehend. They created back stories and myths about the creation and existance of thier god in order to justify thier beliefs. Think about all the cultures around the world and thier history..each has a God that is unique...Not because thier gods really exist but rather they are the ones who created them..thats why they hold them in so much regard.

I have no trouble in believing in a true god or universal force. I just don't subscribe to many of the mainstream religious views on this subject.

I do not disbelieve or believe in a higher power, as Buddha said it is impossible to know. I once did but after being exposed to the undeniable logic of Buddha my blind faith was finally revealed for what it was and I abandoned it. But neither should one embrace blilnd denial for as Buddha said:
Let yourself be open and life will be easier. A spoon of salt in a glass of water makes the water undrinkable. A spoon of salt in a lake is almost unnoticed.

because some of us try to believe in him and pray for good things to happen and all we get is crap and more suffering, why should we do everything he says if he gave us free will, all we should do is believe in him and you can have sex before you are married, not go to church, be gay if you feel like it. Basically too many rules and not much gratification.

I'd hate to believe that there is an omniscient, omnipotent power in the universe, and this was the best it could come up with.

I think that too, but the people who dont believe are blinded by power. They think they are all powerfull because there is nothing greater than a human being. Truly sad that those who do not believe will burn in the pits of hell as we believers chill in paradise.
