i just got contacts about a week ago, and im still learning to use them. i cant remember what my optometrist said about cleaning them. i know i asked this question to her but i cant remember her reply lol. so do you have to wash your contacts (with solution) everyday, even on the days when you dont use them or take them out of the case?? i know you have to clean them before and after use, but if i dont use them for a couple of days, do i need to clean them on those days too??

I am going to presume you are wearing monthly, soft lenses.
The advice is that you should clean them before and after you wear them. This involves putting the lense in your hand and putting a little lotion on it and rubbing it clean. You are also advised to clean both sides. In addition, you should also clean lenses thoroughly after prolonged lengths of storage (more than seven days).
However, to be honest, I rarely do any of that. When I just take the lenses out of the case, I make sure that my hands have already been cleaned, and then avoid too much contact with them, and put them in as soon as possible. I hate getting lotion all over my hands, and find it makes it harder to hold my eyes open whilst I insert them. If you do decide to clean both sides, try to avoid turning them inside out, as this damages them and also can get you confused about which way is the correct way. I just wouldn't bother. I never wash them after, I see no point, they are going to spend all night in the case anyway.
If I ever drop a lense, or it gets too dirty, from trying to put it in my eye, and failing, then I just put it back in the case, and shake it a little, to rinse all the dirt off, and then simply try again.
The problem I find is that your hands get totally wet, and then it is very difficult to put the lenses in, and then they can even get more dirty after that. I just simply take them out and put them in as soon as possible, and that has worked fine for many years. Hope this answers your question, although I will point out that of course cleaning them will do you no harm!

It may be less necessary to clean them on the days they do not come out of the case. Remember, however, that the solution in the case needs to be fresh as well. Since you are new to contacts, and eye infections can be painful and dangerous, until you have had more experience, err on the side of caution and clean everything, including the solution in the case, every day. And be alert to the news: a very reputable company recalled a batch of contact lens solution recently because they were contaminated.

Oopsy-Daisy, call your doctor back. Do not be embarrased, he/she is here to help. There are a large number of contact types and contact cleaning systems. If you are supposed to take them out at night then usually you clean them. Some systems have you store them in one solution and clean with another. Mine you clean and store using the same solution. Your eyes need to remain healthy... everyone has different challenges, so what works for one in the short term may not work for you.
Best of luck.
