Chikungunya virus is transmitted by mosquito bites and causes high fevers and severe joint aches with inflammation. The disease is often diagnosed by index of suspicion in coincidence with the symptoms that include joint aches. There are no licensed diagnostic tests although many laboratories have enzyme linked immuno-sorbent ELISA assays that are useful in diagnosing that the virus was the cause of the fever. Polymerase Chain Reaction PCR assays are being developed that use specific primers selected from the most unique gene sequences of the virus. See the URLs (below) for more information
