I'm a cook at a restaraunt and recently $70 dollars came up missing.
the owner was going to make everyone put in to pay it back like 6 dollars each, well the next day another $70 dollars came up missing. isnt it illegal to take money out of someones paycheck if he doesnt have your permission? the cooks do not even have access to the registers. he has cameras in the store but they havent been working forever and he has just never fixed them. Wouldnt it be illegal for him to take money out of everyones paycheck without their consent?>

well the cash registers have keys needed to open them but the owner leaves all the keys in the keyhole to all the registers and any girl working the registers just goes to the register the customer is at. cooks have no reason to go to the register. the managers could be stealing the money too because they are the last ones there at night. given that it would be about 15 dollars from everyones paycheck it is the pricipal and the fact that he has cameras that he doesnt fix on his own to prevent this.

I work at a pizza place to be more specific, the pizza place is more of a delivery, sit-in restaraunt, there is no one that has a tipped hourly wage, there are hardly any tips ever involved, not enough tips to be classified as a tipped out employee.

Absolutely. He cannot pass on the losses of his business to his employees.....does he pass on the benefits of tax writeofffs to you? NO! So then why is he passing off business losses???

tell him to stop, or you'll first file a complaint with your State Division for Labor Standards and Enforcement, and then you'll dsue for back wages + interest. He'll stop faster than you can boil an egg!

Who has access to the cash register? If it's costing him that much money then he should invest in a good cash register with a lock on it and only give one or two employees the right to use it. Either that or empty the register every hour or so, so that there is not that much cash in there (say $100) only...then if someone steals it's pretty evident. He could put a monitor over the cash register to monitor it too. Seems like he is losing a lot of money so he may as well spend it to stop that. It's not right for everyone else to pay for it, illegal or not...but I am sure it is illegal.

If you know who it is you're best to fess up and tell the guy.

It is 100% illegal to charge employees for being short cash where a register is involved. The exception is where you hand the boss 200$ and you have 210$ in orders. You owe him 10$. If you put each order in the register after you get it and perform a transaction, than you are not responsible for the money. They can fire you of course, if you are the only one on the register.

In short, this is ilegal and I would complain

If its not illegal, it would cost my boss 12 dollars worth of production time. A complete slow down in the store by all employees would hurt him much more than a $140.00.

Its bad business to piss off all the employees at once.

It looks like the owner is pretending that $70 came up missing just to pay you guys less... I definately agree it is illegal. You should tell him to call police to make a report. But it doesn't make any sense how $70 are missing and they make you guys pay for it. It's not you're problem....

I would think there's no way that's legal. Someone may be taking the money, he needs to put in a surveillance camera to catch them. As for you, I would call an attorney out of the phone book, and just ask. They'll answer simple questions for you. :) Good luck!

Looks like the guy is trying to get his employees to pay for his $70 a day "habit" Call the authorities and if he fires you for doing that he can get charged with something for that too ! Unlawful termination

Yes it is illegal. I suggest you call the better business bureau and have them look into it. It sounds like the owner might be scheming to get money to cover some underlying cost. If no one stands up for it he might keep doing it.

Contact your States Department of Labor. Report to them what is happening. They will investigate it and make him give you your money back. Something fishy is going on. Funny how it is always the same amount of money.
