It is an outmoded custom that you no longer have to pay attention to. (FYI it was white SHOES after Labor Day.)

White is considered a "summer" color, vs. "winter white" which is slightly off-white. So it was considered unstylish and inappropriate to wear white-white shoes vs. winter-white shoes any time except between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which in North America is "summer."

However, etiquette experts such as Miss Manners have dismissed this rule in modern society. So, wear what you want - just don't run into Serial Mom! :o)

It goes back to the days when there were fashion "rules". You could not wear white shoes before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. I don't know why. Other rules were such as wearing a hat and gloves each time you went out in public, your hose could not be darker than your shoes, you always wore a slip with your dress/skirt, etc.

It's an old fashioned rule, no white after Labor Day until Easter. It no longer applies.

I find that in my climate in Michigan, wearing white is harder to keep clean in the winter. The salt melting the snow and ice reveals the dirt/mud and even the cars have a harder time staying clean in the winter wetness. That is why it's more fashion friendly to wear off white or "winter white", or cream colors. They also look cozier as well as elegant.

that was a rule in the 1950's and no-one uses it anymore; reason for it - was because white was considered a spring/summer color and after Labor day comes fall/winter.

that's a myth...you can wear white after labor day, as long as it's like a lightweight sweater or top, and not like a white tank top...color doesn't really make a difference, it's the fabric that matters.
