It is nearly impossible for most people to come to the US legally? If you don't have money or a college degree or family members who are citizens or permanent residents, you can't come here legally, period.

Imagine your family is starving and you wait in line for two days to get a visa but you are denied because you are poor (the main reason visas are denied every day).

Would let your family starve because your principals do not allow you to break the law? Or would you do what it takes to feed them?

If you did, would that make you a criminal, would that mean that your character is flawed, that you deserve to be treated like an animal?

This is the real situation of most people who come to the US illegally. I know because I practise immigration law.

The responses are interesting. It clears up quite a few questions I had about what people really believe.

I find it interesting that no one said what they would do if their families were starving and they could not get a work visa.

I also find it interesting that people equate travelling across a border with theft and murder.

Wonder how many of them have "neglected" to report income on their taxes or had a few beers and drove home or gave a fake story to get out of a ticket but are quite self righteous when it comes to people trying to survive.

I represent immigrants who are attempting to legalize their status. I am proud of my work and I would much rather be helping people improve their lives than be an enforcement agent and spend every hour of every day dividing families and making people suffer.

That's just me.

I didn't realize it was that hard, but my opinion hasn't changed. I've long felt that people were mis-guided in their anti-immigrant fervor -- a case of attacking the people at the bottom, the most powerless.

It's a way to keep people distracted so they don't start thinking about changes we'd need to make to become a society fit for humans to live in. After all, it's the employers of immigrants that always prevent the government from stopping illegal immigration. They don't want to have to pay living wages.

Maybe if I took it as granted that everyone in the world somehow has a god-given right to come here. But I don't. Our nation has every right to say who can and can not come here. Just the same way you have a right to say who enters your home or who doesn't.

Right now, in whatever city you live in, there are poor, starving homeless people. When you start letting all those people live in your house, not pay rent, take money from you every now and then, pay for all their medical expenses, and pay to send their children to school, then, and only then, will your tear-jerker "but they're POOR!" argument cease to be hypocritical.

As a lawyer you should understand how unfair it is to say that group A and group B both broke the law, but group B won't be punished because they are poor and from Mexico. I've never seen a poor black man get any extra compassion when he's convicted for selling drugs to feed his family. And he's a citizen, for crying out loud! So what the hell makes an illegal Mexican alien so much better then a citizen that the illegal shouldn't be punished for breaking the law in order to feed his family?

And in regards to your "would you let your family starve or break the law" question, I would break the law. But I wouldn't expect special treatment just because of my race and financial status when the time came to pay the piper. Although i'm sure some sleezy lawyer would try to convince me to use that as a defense.

Just because ppl r denied the Us visa doesn't mean that u've been treated like an animal. But as far as i have seen if you are not well educated and come to the States then u will be treated here like an animal. Mind you "Treated like an animal" not by the US Govt but by the businesses that hire the illegals knowingly that they can't call for any help.

To apply for the US Visa it takes more than $100.00 so ppl who is starving in our own country should not be applying for the visa anyway. Instead with that money they can feed their family. I think the counsulates at the US embassies should do a better job on not considering the applications of the uneducated ppl who applies for the visa thus not accepting the app fee. These ppl should go to China instead.

Why will all these people trying to get into the United States NOT fix their own countries? America's not the magic land of Oz, people sweated, bled, and even died to make the country what it is today. What people want is 'something for nothing', and that's not how it works. Mexico's got money, they just don't share out with their own citizens. No amount of leniency or handouts on america's part can ever hope to compensate for corruption and incompetence. I feel sorry for the people on the other side of the border, yes, but throwing the gates wide only treats the symptom, the underlying problem is that they need to get their act together, and fix their own country. Until and unless that is done, this cycle will only continue, to the direct detriment of our country, and if we let it go forward like this unimpeded, there will come a day when the United States is banging on someone else's door asking for assistance. We've been MORE than generous with Mexico and other countries, giving until it hurts, and then some. It's time for people in Mexico and elsewhere to take charge of their own destinies, and build the better life they're seeking right where they are. Enough is enough, time for a reality check, here.

this is why coming to the USA has to be preserved and the immigrations laws enforced. Most people dream about coming to this country. If it were to turn into another Mexico, it would ruin what this country had built itself up to be.

It is sad that we cannot have open borders, but it would be abused and those coming in would just rape our system.

Most Americans have nothing against immigration, that is what has made this country so great. It is ILLEGAL immigration that we are worried about and want to stop.

Also into today's world of terrorists, we HAVE to monitor the borders and know who is here and where.

Why don't you shut down the border shut it down it's very unfair for the U.S. to have immigration laws and everyone must be allowed in. If you practise immigration law what is Mexico doing with all the USAID ? Why isn't Mexico appealing to the world for shipments of food to help feed it's people as everyone there but 10 people are broke and hungry. Cite the immigration laws of 1980's all the promises made ?

It doesn't change my opinion about illegally entering this country. But based on what seems to me to be an obvious need for more immigration, I think we need to open up the US for increased immigration. We have millions of illegal workers here, and still have an unemployment rate below 5%. That means there is more work than (legal) bodies.

I'm more in favor of government increasing the immigration quotas, and also increasing a temporary worker type quota.

Unfortunately, this issue has been demagogued both right and left, and rationality is being eschewed.

right here in is the concern properly certainly it is your situation; you have listened to misguided instructors and preachers. once you're a Christian then you definately grew to alter into one by using the convicting skill of the Holy Spirit which you mandatory to ask for the forgiveness of your sins. those sins which you probably did interior the physique in rebellion against God. however the genuine of that checklist grew to become into no longer soliciting for the Salvation of your soul. Now in case you probably did repent of your sins and ask for the forgiveness of your sins then by using faith in Christ's dying burial and resurrection you have been cleansed of your sins! God gave you new raiment! because of the fact of this at Easter new clothing grew to become right into a convention representing what Easter meant an replace of your filthy rags of unrighteousness with the righteous clothing of Christ's vesture upon you. Then having been born of God you pick a 2nd better artwork it is termed the baptism with the Holy Spirit, and the crucifying of the sinful nature interior you so as which you will positioned to dying the works of the devil for that's what Christ got here to do - to break the devil's artwork in all of us that calls upon the call of the LORD.

I't's the old humunitarian vs. logical goverment policy debate.
My illegals friends send thier money back to Mexico to feed thier kids. I can't blame them for this..on a humanitarian level. On a logical goverment policy level I would say they are leeching and are here illegally. One thing is though nobody is forcing these people to have 9 kids with 4 different partners. This I can't support. So if we deport illegals(which is perfectly legal) we will be branded racist murderers..;becuase there will be literally thousands of people starving in mexico in consequence..what a mess

Not at all. Ship every single one out of here. Let them go back to their own country and deal with it. We have too many problems here as it is without these people sucking the life out of our economy!
