they beat the snot out of people that don't fight back...or...they verbally abuse people that don't have the guts to stand up.
typically they are smarter and stronger than the people they abuse...but some are just plain getting away with it because they are dealing with 'nice' people.

First, you need to know that their are different types of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, and economical.
Often, an abusive person is overly jealous and controlling, has a very bad temper and poor anger management skills, violates your privacy, contrasting public and private behaviour, makes repeated attacks on your self worth, erratic mood swings, flirts with others in public, engages in unlawful activity, has unrealistic expectations, cruelty to animals and/or children, "playful" use of force during sex, excessive drinking, substance abuse, breaking objects, etc

An abusive person usually has a lot of pent up anger from their child hood. That is where they learned to be abusive: is to have been abused. They are moody, temperamental and aggressive.
