Sure, fancy cupcakes and punch is fine for a bride with a lower budget (cupcakes wouldn't be appropriate for a very formal wedding, but for others it's a great option).

Just be sure that you have the ceremony and reception at a non-meal time of day, or else it will be considered rude to not serve a meal.

And your invitations should indicate something like "Dessert reception at three o'clock" so it is clear to your guests that a meal is not being served.

You can probably also add in a nice fruit and cheese tray from a nearby upscale grocery store-- have people eat those nibbles while mingling and then serve cupcakes closer to the end of the reception.

Cupcakes are a great idea. You can tiered cupcake stnds to put them on. We are using the stands for fruit cups. They are really cute. You can get them at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, or from wilton.com.

You can also have a fake tiered cake made out of styrofoam. Most bakers will do this. We had some made for a bridal show display and nobody knew they were not real. (very cheap it cost us $5.00 a tier for our fake cake) Then you can have sheet cakes made up and keep them in the back room. Bring out the sheet cake already sliced. That way you can have a beautiful cake to look at and an affordable, tasty cake to eat.

You know, cupcakes are a great idea - Try googling images of "wedding cupcakes" and see all the ideas you can get!

It may be that just baking cupcakes at home and icing them may well come across as hokey (but I bet they would taste FAR better than some fancy-schmancy cake.) On the other hand, I had a friend who had marzipan cupcakes made to look like frog's open mouths (she loved frogs) and it was GREAT!

Non-traditional is a great way to really relax and enjoy your wedding day!

Cupcakes aren't childish at all. Your wedding is a celebration and what could make one happier than one's own little cake?

I would suggest using a cupcake tree or cake platters. For a recent shower I stacked 3 cake platters (each one smaller than the last). I put different color cupcakes on each level. Everyone ooooohed and ahhhhhed at "my idea".

What's most important is what makes you happy! If you want cupcakes, have cupcakes. My fiance hates cake. So, instead of a groom's cake...we're having groom's brownies!

I've seen the most beautiful cupcake wedding cakes in magazines and on tv.....If you're on a budget it would be a great way to do something different and get a lot of compliments! Not only that, you could do them in all different flavors and icings and really make a statement! Good luck and congrats!

I have seen cupcakes, doughnuts, sheetcakes, you can do anything you want its your wedding. You could have cookies if that's what you like. Have fun with it. Just enjoy yourself. You don't have to break the bank to make your day memorable. Besides do most people even remember the cake they had at a wedding... How about a cookie tower all stacked neatly with a white ribbon flowing down the side. You could do the same with cupcakes. Good luck to you on your wedding.

I've seen this done. They weren't the typical round cupcakes, more like tiny rectangles. Each guest got their own, and they were arranged on a three-tiered silver tray in the middle of each table. They were fun flavors.

Yes, this is acceptible if the rest of your wedding includes such low-cost methods. The cupcakes will look odd if the rest of your wedding is lavish and overdone. But if you're having your reception in a backyard tent, or a semi-formal banquet hall instead of a grand hotel, then they're completely fine.

My cousin wanted to have cup cakes for her wedding cake. She wanted to get a huge paper cup custom made and have it filled with layers of cup cakes. The big cup would be held by a ribbon that she would untie with the groom instead of cutting the cake. Then you can distribute the cup cakes. It can work for you I think. Too bad she couldn't have this because the reception place insisted that the wedding cake was part of the deal. Good luck! Congratulations!

What about a sheet cake instead of the traditional tiered cake? Or cheesecakes or other types of cakes besides the traditional? Or you could have one elaborate cake for the cutting and then cupcakes for the guests...why not?? Its your wedding!!
