That patriotism was hijacked to push us into a war that had nothing to do with 9-11, while the architect of that attack - Osama bin Forgotten - continues to scheme against us.
Expect a united America after the next presidential election - if the patriotism hijackers can refrain from swiftboating our veterans long enough to get behind the effort.

I don't think people have forgotten but when it isn't in our faces all the time (news, television, etc.) it is easier to put it on the back burner. I also believe that this country is not united...look around, although not terrorism from another country, our people are turning against each other...look at the murder rates, look at the disrespect of race, color and religion! Until this country can come together as one I honestly don't think we will ever be a true "United" country full of Patriotism! We are in another country fighting for peace, fighting for freedoms, fighting for a statement...why would they take us seriously when they look at our world here and see that we cannot live in peace, have the freedom to walk down a street and not be shot, what kind of statement does that make?! I agree we need to display our flags, we need to support our troops, we need to (even though he has made mistakes) support our President...(if you could do a better job, run for office, vote or shut the hell up). Think how these other countries came to be the way they are...is that where we are headed?

The US is a nation where the "non-negotiable" and unsustainable "American" way of life is propped up by global conflict, out-of-control military spending, massive and unsustainable debt, and an increasingly-aggressive fascist police state. It is a nation where all US citizens who do not resist and disconnect from this paradigm enjoy their ever-diminishing privileges with the guilty knowledge that somewhere else, hopefully in some "other" country, others are paying the price for it. My country is dead. Its people have surrendered to tyranny, and in so doing, they have become tyranny's primary support group; its base constituency; its chief defender. Every day they offer their endorsement of tyranny by banking in its banks and spending their borrowed money with the corporations that run it. The great Neocon strategy of George H.W. Bush has triumphed. Convince the American people that they can't live without the "good things", then sit back and watch as they endorse the progressively more outrageous crimes you commit as you throw them bones with ever-less meat on them. All the while, lock them into debt. Destroy the middle class, the only political base that need be feared. Make them accept, because of their own shared guilt, ever-more repressive police state measures. No amount of mind control spin can absolve any of us from acknowledging this ugly truth about the US and its crimes today. It lurks invisibly behind every corporate news broadcast, every commercially-made television show, every infomercial, every new magazine ad, and almost every new popular song that leads Americans deeper into ever-less-satisfying consumption, self-indulgence and debt. It stands grinning behind every report on the world's rapacious financial markets and every new automobile, shampoo, or other product that promises to give the world larger and more potent sexual organs, bigger (more ridiculous) breasts, a better love life, and peace of mind.

Well when I visit the States I see A LOT of patriotism still. I was in NY during a chunk of the world cup and the only flags I saw were American. Here in Canada there seems to be a much bigger embrace of the rest of the world and not just Canada. Perhaps you have just become desensitized.

I have an American Flag hanging on my porch and on my car. A lot of people don't support this war, so they kinda don't do stuff like that anymore, when really they should support the soldiers by showing patriotism and sending care packages to the ones stationed in Iraq.

On 9-11-01, I watched the planes slamming into the World Trade Center for about five minutes and returned to my work, realizing that this was probably a sham fabricated by the Bush administration for more sinister purposes.
Yes, it elicited the desired effect: and it gave Bush a convoluted "reason" for illegally and unconstitutionally invading a sovereign nation that had nothing to do with 9-11. But with all the patriotic hoopla, Bush didn't need any rationale; all he needed was a hyped-up Congress and pumped-up populace to give him the "go-ahead". Bush invaded Iraq for only two reasons: 1) He had a personal vendetta against Hussein for humiliating his daddy during Desert Storm, and 2) Dick Cheney wants all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands so he and his Exxon-Mobil buddies can get richer and richer and richer.
Americans have a short attention span when it comes to affairs of state, or political agendas. But we'll gobble up all the news that's fit to print in the National Enquirer or People magazine about Tom Cruise and his wonderful girlfriend, or Britney Spears' love life, or Christie Brinkley's cheating husband.
Politicians know we don't care about things that really matter, so they get us on a flag-waving, patriotic bender every once in a while just so it looks legitimate. Meanwhile, they go about their wicked business of self-serving greed and power lusting, all while sucking off the taxpayers' teat.
It's going to take a lot more than American flags stuck out of our car windows and yellow ribbons to create a sense of patriotism in this country. It's going to take a full-blown revolution wherein corrupt politicians are eliminated.

Americans need to stop being bamboozled with phony patriotic promotions that divert our attention from real issues, such as corrupt political parties that have a stranglehold on our political system; self-serving politicians beholden to special interest groups, lobbyists, and big business; and rigged political voting debacles that truly do NOT allow the people to elect their representatives any longer.
Take a hard look at what's going on and view it with a little skepticism (something the 'fourth estate' should be doing, but no longer does). Is it possible that the incident at Heathrow Airport was staged by the Bush administration to help boost Bush's approval ratings just prior to mid-term elections?
Is it possible that we've been lied to all along by what is arguably the most corrupt, evil, incompetent, arrogant, cowardly administration AND Congress is American history?
I agree with you: patriotism is a necessary and wonderful thing that all Americans should participate in; but patriotism is a lot more than waving the flag once in a while and posting a yellow ribbon on your car. True patriotism means being involved in your government and watching to ensure that your government isn't lying to you or deceiving you.
Thomas Jefferson once said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood or patriots and tyrants." That time is way past due. -RKO-

easily, i've got self belief that once the Dems observed what the administration became doing with the so-stated as patriotism (easily, it became concern), they did no longer "climb off the bandwagon of patriotism" as you placed it. They grew to alter into patriots by using protecting the form of the U. S. against the flexibility grab of the administration. President Bush seems to think of that the form applies to each physique different than him and his cronies. Bush has repeatedly violated the regulations of this united states of america, overstepped the bounds of ability imposed upon his workplace by using the form, violated his oath workplace to "uphold and shelter the form of the U. S., so help me God," and the rights of electorate of the U. S. as interior the case of Jose Padilla. it somewhat is extra of a risk to this united states of america than something Al-Qaeda can do. As for the Dems being "self-in seek of ability mad gluttons" all of us understand that the Repubs are under no circumstances fascinated in protecting ability and have in elementary terms the suitable hobbies in ideas for u . s . a .. This explains the surprisingly focused tax cuts for the wealthy (which reward me, by using the way), the great deficits (have you ever observed that record deficits have befell in elementary terms under Republican presidents? and under the previous 3 in a row?) and the gutting of the clean Air and clean Water Acts. needless to say, those strikes are interior the suitable hobbies of all the persons. So say I.
