Maybe it is the closeness and physical contact with his mom that he is missing. Have you tried holding him in the same position but substituting a sippy cup or bottle instead of your breast?

I couldn't handle breast pumping beyond 6 months and I was never able to nurse so kudos to you mom. Don't let these other posters get on you over nursing. Many women in other countries in Europe nurse children until they are three, four and even five years old or until they have another child.

How much physical activity is he getting the hour prior to nap time? Maybe he would be more willing to accept the warm milk if he was truly tired. You might try letting him run around outside, and then having a small snack before putting him down. Also, I have a barrage of lullabies that my daughter makes her requests from. Reading a book, and then "pretending to fall asleep" also has worked for me. I just roll over and start making snoring noises, and she will imitate me, in a few minutes she's out!

It is always hard introducing a new routine. If you are starting to wean him, then you might have a few days of difficulty, but once he gets used to it, he'll be alright. Try warming a blanky in the dryer and wrapping it around him, read a short story and put him down for his nap.

Is there a particular reason that you don't want to nurse him to sleep? There is nothing wrong with it!

Hate to tell you this.....but when my kids gave up nursing they pretty much gave up naps too.

EDITED TO ADD:
A nursing two year old is NORMAL.....no matter how many hang-ups these other posters have about it!

it's perfectly okay to nurse your baby to sleep, so if you're hoping to wean him from that because of ignorant people telling you he should have been weaned a long time ago don't bother. if, however, it is something that you need to do for yourself (hey, it's your body, too!) then i advise nursing him in a chair in the room for a few days. then a chair outside of the room. while you are doing this you can be slowly introducing a new routine for him like reading a story in bed or rubbing his back. good luck!

If you still want to nourish your child with your breastmilk, you can without nursing him. Get a breast pump and let your child see the flow of milk from the pump to the retainer. Do this a few times and then change to warm, whole milk. You need to ween this child off your breast because this seems to be troublesome for you. Good Luck!!
