Because there are a lot of false assumptions and libel here about who and what atheists are. Because atheists might actually have something to contribute to an argument. Because atheists feel the need to confront ignorance with knowledge. Because atheists have as much right to be here as the evangelicals. Because there are an awful lot of Christians, Muslims and others who are intent on trying to get their religion into legislation. Because there are people here who have outright said that atheists should be rounded up and killed.
Lots of reasons.

1)*Some* atheists are effectively fundamentalists, with their god being no god, and they can be just as obnoxiously pushy as some Christians.
2) Evangelizing Christians are so easily wound up. If they would stop acting so predictably, they'd get picked on less. Of course, they have a theology that priviledges martyrdom and persecution, so maybe they're inclined to bring it on themselves to prove their own merit.
3) Likewise if they'd (Evangelical Christians) consent to a live and let live policy. Sometimes their absolute certainty that they have a monopoly on the truth just gets to be too much. Especially when they consider it their defined and prescribed moral duty to foist it on the rest of us. Debate is pointless, so the options are to ignore it, try anyway or go on the attack.
4) Some people who define themselves as atheist care deeply about religion and what is often done in its name and through its agency. We'd like to have a conversation and too often get trashed instead.

I try my best to educate theists everywhere I go. I happened to find that this place is crawling with them, though, and it's an easy venue to slap some sense into them, whether they like it or not...

This video might enlighten you a bit on the subject...
Edit - Thinkidiots... Atheists don't claim to know there's no god. We just know that all the popular ones are myths. Therefore it makes no sense to assume that any other ones are any different. Your grandchildren will understand. I'm not sure if you will or not.

I've answered the same questions so many times that I can now type my answers at a speed of approximately two hundred words per minute (that's just my guess).
It's an easy way to rack up points.

They evangelize just like Christians and Muslims.
As a side note, atheism is illogical; there is no way to know or prove that something does *not* exist, anywhere in the Universe or Universes or whatever. No way to prove the non-existence of anything.
Agnosticism leaning towards non-belief in God is logical. In fact, it's the most logical belief barring a personal experience whose veracity on can, somehow, certify.
But atheism is always 100% illogical for any non-omniscient being. (The only way to know something does not exist is to know everything.) So, start calling yourself agnostic or realize that you sound stupid to anyone with half a brain who spends 15 seconds thinking about it.

First of all, I'd like to second the opinion that we atheists like to confront ignorance with knowledge and reasonable thinking.
I'd also like to retort that as an atheist, I would rather be illogical, implying incorrect thinking, than ignorant, implying no thinking.

A fox was cough in a trap and managed to shake itself loose but lost its tail in the process. He went back to his clan and saw everyone but itself is wagging their beautiful tail. So he got an ideal and told everybody "let's cut off our tails, it is useless, and so much lighter to travel and not to mention so much safer to move around with the fields filled with traps.
The clan thought it is a good idea, and prepared themselves to clip off their tail. Suddenly a little fox screamed "Don't do it. he wants to cut off our tails because he has none!"
No comparison with the fox here, But it is a human instinct and we feel much better when we can get more and more people to see things our way. like "There is no God" So the preaching goes on.

"atheists" believe there is no god/deity.
Some of them cannot bear being told "God does exist.", because it is against their own beliefs. So you see some of them here in this section.
But 99.9% of the true "atheists" don't even care about religion-section: no interest. So, you won't ever see one of them. Only the 0.1%.
