The problem here is that a cat's memory span is about .0000000003 seconds long. It does its thing and forgets all about it. So when you smack the cat, it doesn't associate the blow with the spraying.

Rather than hit an animal (which only means that you are out of control, rather than the cat being under control), why not buy some of the spray stuff at Petco or Petsmart that keeps a cat from scratching furniture? As I understand, that also keeps the cat from spraying, too.

Neutering is your best bet, though. You say that you can't afford it, but most vets will let you set up a payment schedule. Sometimes, the local Human Society offers low cost vet care, and our area even has vets who do a "Spay-a-thon" where they will spay or neuter a pet for low to no cost.

I'm not sure who this other person is, but your cats are your responsibility, along with any damage that they do. If you can't accept that, then you probably need to find a new home for the animals. Blaming someone else for your cats' problems is pointless and makes you look immature.

Sorry if that sounds judgmental, but that's just how I read the situation.

Hitting them will just make them do it more. Normally male cats spray around the edges of their territory - where they feel challenged. If you have two tomcats living in the same place they will both spray because they will be constantly arguing about territory. If you start hitting them you will make them afraid as well which makes them just spray more. If you have already been hitting your cats you have probably created a problem that can't be fixed while they remain with you. Otherwise I would suggest getting them fixed and it might stop. But now you need to find new homes for them. You should do so as soon as possible as you are obviously not a suitable person to have the care of an animal. You have ruined your cats with your selfishness and stupidity. Someone else will need to fix up the mess you have made, but I'm sure it won't be the first time.

Ok, everything that you wrote is WRONG! But let's start at the end shall we? I don't understand your statement that it's "the other persons responsibility". How would someone else fixing their cat prevent your cat from spraying in your house?? It's YOUR cat and YOUR house that is being sprayed, why should someone else have to be responsible for it? Secondly, why do you have any pets if you are a) such a clean freak and b) not willing to take care of them. It's your responsibility as a pet owner to provide a safe, loving home (which by hitting your cats you are not) and you also need to give them health care, which involves neutering. Hell, if you hit me all the time I'd **** all over your stuff too. It's possible he may have a urinary tract infection, that will cause cats to urinate around the house. But it's probably because he isn't neutered. You need to get the cat neutered!!!!!!

You have asked a series of questions and made statements that suggest that the problem goes beyond abusing cats. Please for your own sake, before you do some serious damage , to yourself or to others (and I include both two legged and four-legged animals) I would strongly urge you to get professional help and guidance. Airing your frustrations on the Internet seems to be a way of trying to find validation for your position but what I hear and what I suspect many others hear is the cries of despair. I don't know what caused you to be like this. You cite abuse, but we have all being abused or bullied or discriminated against to a certain extent, but as we grow older we try to learn from our pain and come to understand what it means to be truly human. If you continue to justify inflicting pain on others because you yourself experienced pain, you cannot live a productive life. I hope that you will take the necessary steps to heal your wounds, or that someone with some expertise in this area will give you the necessary counseling.
And please, give your cats up to the humane society where they can find a loving home. No innocent creature 'deserves' to be tortured.

Well hitting a cat dont work. The only way to stop the male from spraying is getting him fixed or put him outside so he cant spray in the house. If its not your cat, well accidently let him out.

You have to get male cats fixed before 8 months old. Once that start spraying they wont stop even after they are fixed. Spca offers a way to get cats fixed at a low cost.

if you can't afford to get your cat fixed don't complain about him spraying in your house, and don't hit him, he doesn't understand. I feel very sorry for your cat to have to live like that.

do you and your cat a favor and take him to a no kill shelter today, he can find a loving home to go to where he won't get hit for doing something that is an instinct to him because someone was irresponsiable and didn't get him neutered. Why do you have a cat anyways? if you can't afford to properly care for him why have one?

you cant teach a cat like you do a dog, hitting them is not going to get the to "understand" Cats cant help but to do that, its nature, you need to understand you CANNOT TEACH THEM NOT TO SPRAY! There are places you can go where they spay them for like $20 if you cant afford to do that then you need to get rid of them. Its very irresponsible to have an animal you cant take care of. And it is very cruel to hit them, if you are actually hurting them that is considered cruelty to animals and you could go to jail for that. Please do the responsible thing and have them fixed or give them to someone who can take care of them!!

I'm detecting a hint of broken english here. They're your cats (you kept referring to them as such throughout your post) yet it's someone else's responsibility to have them neutered? Or did you mean the rest of us are responsible for spaying/neutering our cats and you're somehow exempt from such responsibility?

Bottom line here is you're either going to have to get them neutered or deal with spraying. Try to find a local humane society/no-kill shelter. Many of them have low-cost spay and neuter programs.
