They don't really believe the crap they say they believe. That's why.

- oh no, executions are not murder
- oh no, dropping bomb on civilians isn't murder
- oh no, it's not murder if Bush tells you to do it

...and so on.

Techincally, it's "thou shalt not murder". That's when you get into splitting hairs about what murder is. Presumably "murder" is the illegal taking of human life. Presumably if it's legal, it's not murder.

That's not even mentioning the many times in the Bible that God gave murderous commands. Take those into account and you have all the justification you need for a Holy War, whether it's in Ireland or Somalia or Iraq.

Kill is more accurately translated murder.

As far as murders being committed in the name of religion. This is a sinful world, sin is something good twisted into something evil. God is the greatest good, so why wouldn't God be twisted into the greatest evil in a sinful world?

Murder is in the eye of the beholder. The Koran repeatedly states that it's alright to slay anyone that's not a righteous man, though you must be peaceful and respectful towards anyone who is righteous. In the muslim world, just as it is in the Christian world, righteousness is defined as having the same beliefs that you do.

That leaves the door wide open, doesn't it?...

It all comes down to power. The first Christians were to small in number to resist but once Roma converted they slaughtered and tortured in numbers that put the Caesars to shame.
