I live in LA and my parents live up in Tahoe so I make this trip ALL THE TIME (in fact I'm up in Tahoe now)! You can drive... its a long drive.. but basically you take 1-5 up to Sacramento area and then you turn on Highway 50 and that takes you right into Tahoe. In my car if I fill up in LA, I have to stop for gas in Tracy/Stockton area and then I have to fill up in Tahoe.

The other alternative is flying. Southwest is usually the cheapest. If you flyout of LAX there are two non stop flights right into Reno. If you fly out of Burbank there are NO direct flight so you have a short layover in either Las Vegas, San Jose, or Oakland in fact, sometimes you don't even get off the plane in those cities they stop and let people on/off and then you take off to Reno. Once in Reno you have two choices to get to Tahoe. There is a bus called the south tahoe express (wwe.southtahoeexpress.com) that you can take to all the casinos in South Lake. The bus is like $20 a person one way. FYI the busses are clean and nice... not like a city bus or anything.. its a charter. The other option is to rent a car (some companies offer one way rates meaning you can drop off the car and leave it in Tahoe). Of course you can always take a limo... or a cab (thats about $150).

I prefer flying... but with all the flight regulations and getting to the airport early and stuff and then if you have a layover... its not much of a time saver.. especially since you fly to Reno rather then directly to Tahoe.

Regadless of how you get to Tahoe.. have a nice trip :)

drive up the 395 North. It's a lonely highway, and very beautiful. It's about 8 hours, and so worth it. There's a lot of really neat stops along the way too. Lonepine, Manzanita, Devils Towers, Lake Mono... etc... I reccomend it.
