Matlab is simply a programing language with a hell of a lot of options.

It is good for solveing any equation you want, and for graphing. and for proforming any computational work.

But is just a tool. you have to tell it what to do. The better you are at using it, the more you can do with it. Also you have to be able to put the question in terms that teh machine understants.

It is a tool, but it can not do any thing that you do not know how to do... it can just do it alot faster sometimes.

and if it cost to much to put on your home computer... try scilab... it is a freeware clone of matlab... I found it pretty easy to learn

are you first year grad or undergrad. either way... if you do not know how to do the integral of derivity by hand, you should not be doing it on a computer. you have to beable to do it by hand/ with out a computer... otherwise you will just become more an more relyant on the computer and you are screwed for the test.

Using Matlab is a bit like programming, so it may not be so easy to get a fast answer for your problem, but it is very powerful.
If you just want to solve a math problem I think that a program like Maple is much easier and more direct.
Matlab and Maple,or something similar, is probably provided for free, for educational purpose, by your school, so ask around.

You can get it in your Lab. it is a mathematical software package.
