This looked way too familiar to me. My youth pastor held a burning of "sinful" media and told me I shouldn't listen to hip-hop--and this was in the days of De La Soul!

I'm an old lady of 32. I've never even *been* to Texas, where this took place.

A crusade against any form of media is ignorant, intolerant, against the constitution, against what christianity is about, and is practiced in communism. These people have never listened to a single rap album, they just watch Oprah and hear that rap music is about "bitches, hoes, drugs, etc." They haven't taken a break from daytime tv and american idol to live in reality. In the 60's they were saying rock music was the devil. Now its 'classic rock' and accepted by everybody. I garuntee 40 years later they will laugh at how everybody thought rap music was 'sinful.' The minute the media starts looking at rap music as a form of expression, suddenly the church will find it okay. Society is a herd.

I have about 4000 cds spanning all genres (jazz, soul, funk, r&b, rock, metal, blues, classical and hip hop in particular) and I have found that hip hop is some of the most innovative/expressive music ever, combining all of these genres to create breaks and grooves. To target such an expansive genre of music as evil, is just as ignorant as saying that black people are less intelligent than whites (the church also thought this was true about 50-70 years ago).

Hey, lets go on a ridiculously child-like crusade against the current administration for promoting violence/crappy foreign policy in Iraq!

Religion is a tool used to control. Controllers use methods to keep their controllees in line. This is a typical response from frightened control freaks. Simply put anything that would educate, enlighten or help you understand reality is the enemy of religion and the controllers. Hence music or art- of any kind - that doesn't help the controller is detrimental since their followers might open their eyes or question their mis-perceptions.

In Nazi Germany, Hitler banned books and art and deemed them to be "degenerate" or "insane" - we now know these works of art as masterpieces by free thinkers who fled to America and helped build such movements as surrealism, futurism and expressionism.

The same is said of the religiosity control freaks - those who open their eyes and get away will be better able to see reality and be better more kind hearted people. This is just a small symptom you read in the newspaper. These freaks are everywhere and if you think they are bad watch out for the bigger freaks who are using these smaller freaks to create a sheep-like populous. Those are the creeps that really are evilly scary.

Let's face it..most rap music these days is negative.. period. Not to judge anyone, but it is full of sin. This crusade doesn't suprise me one bit. About time someone stand up and advise kids since the parents don't seem to do it these days.

Rock. u . s . isn't probable my element (yet i'm able to tolerate it), and that i myself do unlike rap except it is in simple terms like one verse as area of a music. Rock has a team of sub genres that i admire, like pop-rock or punk-rock. Rock in simple terms feels deep to me. i'm able to experience it better than rap or u . s .. Rap in simple terms has a tendency to experience shallow and meaningless.

How about a normal crusade against rap music, because no one wants to hear it at midnight blaring out of the next door neighbors house on a work night!

I think its a pretty lame attempt to control people more than they already do. It also seems like a publicity stunt. The preacher must need a new car or something.

I really don't think that rap music really glorifies The Lord. The words are sometimes hard to figure out its like Christian Rock the same with that kind of music. Contemporary and Hyms are great. So my answer to your question is simply don't like rap hip hop what ever you want to call it. And its good what your Pastor did .

andrew w has summarized it in one sentence. organized religion is all about totally controlling your life, and the disempowerment of YOU. think for yourself. belonging to a church is not a prerequisite for being in touch with "god". you can experience that on your own and in a manner which doesn't lead to being repressed and sanctioned by outside authority. be creative, be courageous. the church "governs" through fear and intimidation. don't play! check outhttp://www.sahajayoga.com to experience being in touch with "higher energies", which, through "practice" leads to contact with "god". most humans, consciously or unconsciously, crave this contact. organized religion is not the best means for satisfying it. and neither are drugs, which humans often turn to to as an alternative to "the real thing". good luck;-)

Good for them. Too bad people don't understand it is the responsibility of parents to raise their kids - NOT society.

I keep hearing "There's so much bad stuff on TV, My kid's all over the internet, This music is a bad influence." So be a parent and don't let your kids access it. Entertainment is for adults, too. Parents have to weed out what is mature and what is not.

(I don't mean to say that this church in particular is right, I'm just glad to see someone taking an active part in the lives of their children. Just don't expect it to be banned for everyone.)

Hmm, wonder why they single out this particular genre of music as sinful. Is everything else is OK? It is not sinful to hear about suicide, homicide and devil worship in some rock music, I guess. Ignorance abounds.
