It depends on the assignment. If they go to say, Iraq for a year, it is a deployment. If they are temporarily assigned to a school, or to assist another installation, it is called Temporary Duty (TDY) in the Army & Air Force, and Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) in the Navy & Marines.

This is called deployment if the mission lasts longer than 30 days, if not, it is considered TDY, or Temporary Duty. The Term PCS (Permanent Change of Station) applies when the service person moves there to live for a long time. This can either be an accompanied tour (if the family moves with them) or unaccompanied.

TAD/TDY or deployment. some year long assignements are called Remote Tours(like being sent to Deigo Garcia, Korea or GITMO). Remotes are considered a Permanent Change of Station, but family members(spouses and kids) would not be authorized to move there at gov't expense.

It depends on the length of time. It is most likely temporary duty (TDY), which can last from a couple of days to several weeks, but if it is a little more permanent and lasts for several months to over a year, it is a deployment.

Normal. But you mean every six or eight months, right? A whole year in one place, what did the guy do wrong? Who did he piss off?
