I may be in that phase, but I'm not sure. Things are down in my life right now, really because of my own laziness and excuses. What're the signs I can look for in my own life to determine whether or not I'm looking for sympathy from others?

Hey rrr ttt,

Do you whine a lot? Do you always tell people about your problems. When someone says "how are you", do you tell them how bad you feel?

Every one does this occasionally, you can break out of this mold.
Try ignoring the urge to tell someone how bad you feel, and say GREAT next time.

Here are a few web sites to help answer "the signs" and what to do about them.

The first step is to realize, then you can do something. Good start.

Well you're on the right track so far...refusal to take hold of your life and knowingly creating problems so you later have something to complain about to people. Also a good sign that these are your intentions is, if every time you are around somebody you feel the need to talk about yourself and how everything in your life is going so badly. Also if you have a tendency to blame your problems on anything other then the true cause, you. If people suddenly don't want to talk to you anymore or be around you, you can pretty much bet that you are seeking attention from others...it's annoying and people really don't want much to do with folks like yourself, some will because they like to feel useful just as much as you want to feel cared for, but even those types won't stand for it too long. Grow up that's pretty much all I can tell you.

It's ok and perfectly normal to desire to be validated by others.
