They sell them to resellers who usually also buy the furniture, desks, armoires, etc. The resellers in turn sell them to the public. There's not a huge market for used sheets and comforters so these often get sold only as bulk lots, to boarding schools and nursing homes and such. A quick google search returns this store in LA but I am sure you will find others if you do some searches!

a hotel here got rid of their old mattresses a few years ago, and they sold them for dirt cheap to whoever wanted them. They could have done the same thing with their old blankets, as well.

It's also possible that they donated the old linens and conforters to a battered women's shelter or a homeless shelter.
