The newest religions (like the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster) are basically created to mock other established religions.
Newer religions (like Catholicism, Christianity,... etc) are based around one supreme ruler (God, Allah) and are derived from older religions.
Older religions (celtic-druidism, pagan) are polythieistic (worship more than one supreme being) and are tuned to nature.
The oldest religions (Confucianism, taoism) is based around finding a perfect self (or a form of enlightenment) through practices and sacrifice.

I'm a Baha'i and we believe there is one God, one humankind and one Religion. We believe that the religions in the past where steps in the evolution of the one Religion. At different times and stages in the evolution of humankind God sent His messengers to give us guidance. All these messengers briought us a double set of laws - spiritual and social. The spiritual laws are pretty much the same in all religions. The difference is in the social laws which were always in accordance with the time, the geographic placewhere the Messenger came, and our stage of evolution. The Baha'i Faith is the newest independent religion. Its founder, Baha'u'llah, the Messenger of God for this period of time, brings us new social laws. These lwas apply to problems and situations that humankind deals with now and for the next 1000 years. The Baha'i Faith is not more special or more important than any of the principal religions in the past. It's only the one for our time. If you are curious to find out more about it: www.baha'i.org and/or www.bahai.us.

Simple, Noone Believe them. This is Technological Age, so starting a new belief system is next to IMPOSSIBLE. Even if you do succeed in inheriting a strong following, most likely you will be called a CULT. Its either Jesus, Allah, Jehovah, Following Buddist principles, or Athesist. All the other religions, Noone gives a damn about.

While ancient philosophy has a lot to offer - the modern religions can use them to the best advantage in modern thinking and living. They are not stuck on a particular book.

Most pre-Christian/Muslim/Judaic religions were polytheistic. Monotheism is a modern obsession.
