Use petfinder.org. You can often find rescue societies that will cater to the type of breed you like.

i know it seems like they are never there, but believe me, they dont take them home unless they need special care over nights/weekends or they are just fostering them. i went every saturday for almost 3 years trying to find a young puppy. 16 years ago i got my first puppy there. then 13 years ago, i got my second. finally, a week ago i went again and there was a litter of 7, 6-8 weeks old. its just a matter of timing. you have to be willing to check at least once a week.
but if you want a specific breed, then look for a breeder in your state/area. you can also find rescue leagues for specific breeds.
but the shelters are far better. those poor pups only get about 2 weeks there before they are put to sleep. so even if its not a baby, you can always save a life

I know! Every person that's asked for help in finding a pet was told to go to the animal shelter! I know it's a good thing to do, but sometimes you know what you are looking for!!! Go to the official AKC website and they should have a list of breeds and breeders in your area - if not, try searching for the specific breed you want on the internet and that should give you some breeders, too! Good luck!

Thats true, but you can still try.
If you decide not to get a pup from a shelter please do NOT buy from a pet store. Pet stores usually get puppys from puppy mills or breeders who will put out large numbers of puppies to make profit. No good breeder will sell pups to a pet store because good breeders want to be sure their buyers are informed and the pup is going to a good home, and they do not have a lot of pups available at one time so they all get sold quickly.. Find a breeder, ask lots of questions, if something seems not quite right it probally isn't.
Good luck.

If you want to be sure that the dog stays small, don't go to the shelter. Contact breeders of small dogs and find out about puppies in their litters that are not "show quality" and therefore cost less.

If you want to take on someone elses problem... go to a shelter! If you want to help puppy mills and poor breeding, go to a pet store! If you want a pure bred puppy, without any problems with genetics or behavior... find a reputable breeder!

Go to the AKC website and find a good breeder if you can't find what you want at the shelter.
If you go to a pet store you are helping to support puppy mills!

Leave a mesage at the shelter to notify you when a small breed puppy comes in because you're interested.

Trust me the volunteers don't bring them home unless its for fostering. You can't adopt a baby in most states they have to be at least 8 weeks old. Try http://www.petfinder.com for a small breed.
