My mom is moving out of Saten Island in 2 years and I don't want to leave Staten Island. There for I have 2 years to get my high school diploma and get 2 jobs so that I can afford to pay my rent. I have to get myself together before she leaves if not I have no choice but to go with her. THAT IS THE LAST THING I WANT! I am a 18 year old high school drop out trying to get my life going on the right path so I can be independent. Feed myself, pay rent and bills. But, I only have 2 years. Living in New York, that will be hard to do, due to the fact rents are extreamly high. Please help! I need all the advice I can get. Please! This is stressing me out. I cant have any fun becouse this is all I think about!

Why not move with mom, then you can save some money, and then you can always move back if you still want to?

It shouldn't take you long at all to get your diploma. Contact your local board of education regarding adult education programs offered. I'm not sure if it is the same in New York, but in Connecticut you have 2 options; you can get your GED, prep classes take a couple of months and then you just have to pass the test. Or you can get an actual diploma by taking night classes. You will need to get the same number of credits as you would have if you stayed in high school, but you also get credit for life experience and they usually have work on your own classes also. You should do this now though since classes will be starting soon if they haven't already.
As far as affording a place to live, start working and saving as much money as you can now. You are going to need quite a bit of money to get an apartment at first. With 2 years to save you should be able to save enough for that and to have a small savings account for when you start out on your own (for any of those little emergencies that pop up.. the car breaks down, an appliance breaks).
Don't limit yourself when looking for jobs either. Once you have your diploma more opportunities will open up to you. Check for openings at some of the larger companies in your area. Often they have quite a few positions that don't require much more experience than a high school diploma and being able to type. If you still are not able to find a job that is going to pay high enough for you to live on your own, remember there is always the option of finding a roommate(s) or renting a room for a while. Who knows, maybe you'll even meet someone while your going for your diploma that needs a roomie?
If this is something you really want and it sounds like it is, then you CAN do it. Just put your mind to it and follow through. Don't let it stress you out; that will only hinder you. Keep telling yourself that you want this and your going to do it, and you will.
Good luck.

I know how you feel. I recently had to think of a plan to make extra money in order to live on my own. I work full time, but it's still not enough. I knew that I would HAVE to have a part time job. I ended up going to bartending school. I know lots of people who bartend and never went to school for it. But I just really wanted to learn how to do it and get certified so I could work anywhere. I just finished the course so I haven't started working yet. From all angles, everyone I talk to about it, they tell me that its a really, really good way to make extra money. So maybe you could consider that.

You have 2 yrs before this happens. Get yourself a job now and work on getting your GED, once you have your GED then you can go out and get a second job. Use on paycheck from one job to save up for the next 2 yrs........ you will have plenty of money by the time your mom moves if you do this. Use the other paycheck to pay your car insurance, cell phone bill, and be able to go out occationally and have fun. Oh yeah and also use that paycheck to pay for you GED......... you can do it.... you know you can. BLessed be........

Go get your GED. If you know a responsible person with mutual respect and like each other, consider getting a roommate to share expenses and give each other moral support. You will mature a lot in the next two years and become eager to be on your own. Don't let it stress you out now

Perhaps moving out of such an expensive area is the thing you need to get your life in order... live with Mom, finish high school and go to college!
