take a stool sample in to your vet. that is really the only way. they can test, which isn't that expensive, and tell you what kind of worms (if any). they have different medications depending on what kind of worms you cat has.

I work at a vet clinic so I can tell you the only type of worms that you will actually see are tapeworms. Hookworms, roundworms, etc. have to be found through a microscope. Regardless of which type of worm, you'll have to take your cat into the vet for a prescription medication. The medicine depends on what type of worm it is. There is no general worm killer, that is an urban legend! If you have multiple cats don't let the other cats use the same litterbox as the one you think has worms. They can become infected through contact with feces. If it's tapeworms then that means you have a flea problem. The ONLY way to get tapeworms is to ingest a flea that is infected with the worm. So even if you don't see any fleas, they are there. (It's ok for cats to share a litter box if it's tapeworms since they can't be spread through feces.) You may want to call your local Humane Society and ask if they have low-cost veterinary care. If not, they should be able to refer you to a clinic that does.

The way you can tell if your kitty has worms deals with behavior and physical attributes:

1) Does kitty have a loss of appetite? Or does kitty have an over-abundant appetite?
2) Is kitty vomiting, leading to dry heaving?
3) Is kitty pooping properly, or at all? I know this sounds icky, but pay attention to detail on this. Consistency, color, smell, etc. It all matters no matter how gross it sounds. We are biological creatues, all of us...and we have some gross things about us...even kitties.
4)Are kitty's eyes sunken in, is kitty drinking properly?
5) Has kitty lost an extreme amount of weight, or can you tell if kitty has lost anything at all?
6) Is kitty's tummy distended?

There are lots of signs and sympotms to look for. Be very observant of your little friend. As for natural methods of treating worms, there are very few. The only things available over the counter will be medicine, or natural therapies from a local health food store; and they are limited as well. If you believe kitty has worms, then do what needs to be done...just call the vet and make arrangements with them to help you. A vet who cares about the animal more than the money will help you with billing.

Like if it is tape worms the segmented pieces will crawl out of his anus. Animals with worms may or may not show visible signs all the time, so it is up to you the owner to treat your pet regularly against worms. Some worms, particularly roundworms from dog faeces present a real public health risk, especially for small children when infected soil is ingested.

If your cat has worms it will either vomit them out or you'll notice them in it's excrement. You should take him to the vet if your cat is an out door cat as these cats tend to get a whole array of worms which a homeopathic treatment would not be suitable for. It won't cost that much and will last a while. O.o Poor cat.

You can grind up a bunch of fresh parsley in a quarter cup of water and cook for three minutes. Strain and freeze in ice cube trays and add 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight once a day. Keep the rest in the freezer and use as needed.

Cayenne pepper is hated by parasites so adding a half capsule per 50 lbs of body weight to food daily. This can be stepped up to a half capsule per 25 lbs of body weight twice a day for one week for faster results.

Grapefruit seeds are a natural for killing, weakening and repelling parasites. Grind up seeds from fresh grapefruits, oranges, lemons, limes, or any other citrus fruit and add to food.

His breath will smell bad. As to making your own worming medicine, this is probably unsafe. There are various plants that can be used as a vermifuge (worming meddy) but their action can be pretty fierce. It is much better to buy a proprietary one - you don't have to spend megabuck$ at the vet, you can get all that stuff at the supermarket for just a few dollars, it is perfectly good.

I've used garlic to worm animals before. Fresh cloves work best if you can get the animal to ingest it. Usually putting a very small amount in their food works fine, but fresh garlic may be too aromatic....in which case, you could try mixing garlic powder with some soft food. It DOES work, but it shouldn't replace veterinary care. Taking your animal to the vet is a good idea.
