The effect depends on the chemical inhaled. Some make your brain swell and it feels like a natural high. Some release the ceratonan (however you spell it:) in you body to make you happy for a little while(Also the effect of X).

It does not matter what the chemical is though they are all damaging to your brain and should not be inhaled like it is a game.

Inhalants are aerosols or gases which make their way to the alveoli in the lungs. This is where gas exchange and ventilation occurs. Gas exchange is possible because the alveoli is a very thin one celled barrier between blood and air. Oxygen and inhalents can diffuse across this barrier into the blood very easily. Once in the blood they go to all organs and cells, including the brain. The brain has a very rich blood supply, and so does the heart. So inhalents are quickly absorbed and have a quick onset due to the method of administration. Depending on their pharmacology, they may affect the heart, lungs, brain or other tissues.

When vapors are inhaled (1), they are absorbed through the lungs (2) and enter the bloodstream (3). Once in the bloodstream, the chemicals travel to the brain (4) and other tissues throughout the body. Most inhalants that are abused depress the functioning of the nervous system. However, the effects of each inhalant are difficult to determine because each product in made up many different chemicals and each person may breathe in different amounts of each chemical. Nevertheless, these chemicals do have significant effects on the nervous system.

Some of the effects of inhalants are simliar to those of alcohol. The immediate effects of inhalants include:

* relaxation
* slurred speech
* euphoria
* hallucinations
* drowsiness
* dizziness
* nausea
* vomiting
* DEATH - from heart failure or suffocating on plastic bags or vomit.

Long term use of inhalants can cause:

* memory loss
* concentration problems
* visual disturbances; blindness
* motor problems
* peripheral nerve damage

Nervous System Targets of Inhalants
Inhalants may affect different parts the brain and nervous system and may cause a variety of sensory, motor, psychological and emotional problems. One major effect of inhalants is the destruction of the myelin sheath that surrounds neurons. This can result in problems in the normal transmission of impulses through neurons and cell death.

Specific areas of the brain targeted by inhalants include:

1. Cerebral cortex: damage can cause changes in personality, memory loss, hallucinations and learning problems.

2. Cerebellum: damage can cause problems in balance and movement.

3. Hippocampus: damage may result in the memory problems.

4. Visual System: damage to the peripheral nerves may cause visual disturbances.

I think household products would be most popular due to accessibility. These include all sorts of cleaning products that. I know of instances of death by using inhalants, not so much from the actual product but from a lack of oxygen I believe. Fumes are probably also likely to corrodes the inside of your nose and cause sinus problems. I don't think the effect would last much beyond the inital 'hit' although there would probably be residual dizzyness. I'm not sure if any product would have longer effects.

One of the guys in my high school when I was attending died from inhaling solvents. The effect according to the medical world is similar to drowning. One breathes deeply but gets little oxygen, tries to get some and gets little, slowly fades from consciousness and then dies from lack of oxygen. Except instead of choking on water, it feels like one can breathe it.
