For my daughter, it has worked out best to keep it a little long, about an inch below the shoulders, and not to layer it. This keeps it a bit heavier, which helps to minimize frizz. We've also found that a good hair smoothing product containing silicone keeps curly, dry hair moisturized and shiny. It took us years, but now she has beautiful, shiny, bouncy curls.

There are to many varables, Your face shape, your texture, thickness, cowlicks all play apart in a professional helping you choose the right cut. Thats why the call us professionals. Also and ultimately you need to make the choice on what you want.(don't leave it up the hairdresser) Because they might think that purple mohawk would be just the thing for you. I have naturally curly hair, but I straighten it almost everyday. What works best for me is way longer hair, it weighs your curls down, and you have more options for wearing it up/down/sides pulled back, etc. My hair looks way poofy if its short. Good luck!
