I've been there before and honestly it's not easy. Think of an introduction, then gently tell him the truth... try making it jokingly or slowly. It's up to you, or what you feel is more comfortable. Make sure that he got the message - clearly.
Believe me the sooner you do it the better. And get ready for answering the question "why"... in case he asks.. which they always do.

He will notice that naturally, just give him some time but don't act cold as ice too so as not to look unfriendly. You two can still be good friends. He will wise up and calm down if he doesn't wanna lose you as a friend. Be patient & good luck.

Just like this: I don't see you on that level (future bf) anymore. Be blunt.

By just telling him. You actually will be doing him a favor by not wasting any more time on you. He can then go for someone else and just be friends with you.

Tell him exactly what you wrote in that last sentence. Say it pleasantly, with a smile, and you might add "sorry," if you want to.
Then be FIRM about it.

"Maybe we should just be friends?" It's a little harsh, but the simplest and most effective way probably.

Just flat out tell him, that thanks for the offer, but that you'd rather remain friends with him...Nothing more. Im sure he will be happy with honesty.
