People want to please authority, and authority pushes religion. On top of that, religion encourages laziness, scapegoating, blaming others for one's faults, tormenting non-believers, and gratutitous violence. What's not to like?

Not everyone is "duped." And this applies to everyone, no matter what they believe.
You are only duped if you BLINDLY follow.
Some just go along with what they hear, without checking out.
Others check it out and either accept or reject what they hear.
Assuming that most Athiests have rejected religion/God, then I would hope that they have checked both sides and then chosen their side, so that they could claim not to have been duped.
Assuming that most non-Christians have accepted their religion, after a comparison of both non and Christian religions, then they would not say they were duped, either.
How can a person say they have made the choice, unless they have weighed both sides of the issue?
And does name calling and put downs prove your side? Or does a calm reasonable attitude?

The same reason anyone is 'duped' into believing anything. They say what the person wants to hear & believe..
kinda like Pres Bush...duped the country into believeing he was doing good things for everyone in the country...
I wasn't duped, I didn't vote for him either time!

Obviously man's tendency to be duped by religion must have survival value or natural selection would have weeded it out, because clearly religion is incredibly wasteful of resources. I suspect that it is because we have evolved a tendency to believe leaders without questioning them. Children who inherit this trait are more likely not to get eaten by preditors because they believe their parents when their parents tell them not to play with the 500 pound "kitty" with the stipes. The children who question and test what they are told were more likely to get eaten before they had a chance to reproduce.

Hucksters like Joel Osteen (and his wannabe supermodel wife), Benny Hinn (dressed in outfits that the Devil would wear), Joyce Meyer (and her holier than thou attitude) and others use religion to dupe people into thinking that they can become materially wealthy while remaining spiritually empty. Meanwhille, the above three become wealthier and wealthier with each second.

Well, I don't know....
Now that Quantum Mechanics has shown that almost any religious beliefs COULD possibly be true (with the probable exception of hard-core Atheism) and now that the majority of "hard" scientists accept the probability of an "intelligent design" to the origin of the universe,
.... the real question you should be asking youself is "Why are YOU being duped by anti-religion?"

I am, NOT duped by religion, I am Catholic, I also like the Christian Monks, (Franciscan's) but, perhaps, this allows me, to I get not just High, but higher with my intentions to reach out to HIM(God), a/o Jesus, always. believe me, your question has giving me that chance, simply because I believed I have a good and simple answer, as well that no interest at all, to get no more than 2 point?. let see if you can at least make the math?, God bless you. and get high as well without the needs to use any substances, but essences that Jesus and God, as well than the Holly and Heavenly family will emanate to the material world, to you and the Universe any and all the time, we take some time out way from our busy schedule to think on then, and be obedient to "God desires for man and woman to pursue and achieved to accomplish for all a better World" because, I am sure, HIM(God), has good desires for our self to become. . God bless you.

r w,
I know! They want to consign themselves to death that ends up in death, having no future outside of what they see. My guess is that their religion is based on the unfortunate fact that their spirit has never done anything to give themselves a spiritual experience. Or even if it has, they are in such disbelief of it, that they have to explain it away merely with the idea tht it couldn't be spiritual, rather it had to be some kind of chemical phenomenon in the brain.
I guess it's too bad for those Atheists. They believe a lie and are condemned because they begin to worship creation and not the Creator. I guess that's tough $#!+ for them!
But they have a right to their religion, just like anyone else.

There are too many reasons to list. The most universal reason is that it is sort of an OCD behavior. People by nature fear the unknown. Death is the greatest of all unknowns and if one can figure out the secrets of death it becomes less scary. Religion comes to the rescue not only telling you what happens after you die (albeit based on speculation) but it offers a happy, peaceful image of "life after death."
People come to religion because it seems to give simple answers to complex problems and allows them to believe they have control over their lives.

Fear, ignorance, gullibility, stupidity. People prefer to live in a childlike state by replacing their parents with God, so instead of mommy and daddy looking after them, God will. People are also scared of death so they pretend that they don't really die after all but go to heaven. Believers are duped because they want to be duped - the self-imposed delusion of a fantasy world. Pathetic but true.
