You can't it's that simple, but the longer you leave it the worst it's going to get, don't string him along, just do it!

That's a sad thing, when one is so deeply in love like that. But you have to be honest with him. Just say what you told us here, but in a more caring way. Sit him down, facing him, hold his hands and tell him that you care deeply about him as a person and a friend, but you've lost that loving feeling you once had for him. Say "I don't want to hurt you, but, if I don't do this now, it will only get harder, and that's not fair to either one of us..."

You can't, so just try your best.

It's a bad time to point out his faults, but feelings change. (I think you found someone else too.) The whole "it's not you, it's me" line is a little old, seldom true, and a little lame, but it is the best way to not hurt feelings.

The other way is to make it like situations are pushing you apart. This is how Casanova would love 'em and leave 'em and they wouldn't hate him for it. He'd pick women who were leaving town, or meet them when he was about to leave town, and would be able to love deeply and then leave, and it was just an unfortuate situation--a cruel twist of fate. Don't know if that will work in your situation though.

Don't stay because you don't want to hurt his feelings, you need to take action right now and approach him gently. Tell him that you had a great time being with him but that you think you need to be single for a little bit to discover yourself. Realize and figure out who you are. Who knows? Maybe along the way, you'll realize that he is actually the one for you. Yes, it may hurt him but the sting isn't as severe as if you continued this lie of a relationship and he finds out much later. Whatever you do, don't tell him that you've lost feelings for him. And reminding him that there is someone else that is better for him out there will only make him bitter and want you even more.

Break up with him now if you honestly have no more feelings for him. Talk to him about those lost feelings, and why you have lost them. If he is a real man, he'll understand, resulting in a mutual breakup with no hurt feelings and a possiblility for future continuance. If he isn't a real man, he'll break down and cry like a little boy and crawl on his knees begging to keep you. If he is the latter, try not to laugh too hard on your way out the door.

Attention young lovers and repeat after me, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO BREAK UP WITH SOMEONE WHO CARES FOR YOU WITHOUT HURTING THEIR FEELINGS.

Yes, repeat that 10 times an hour until you learn this lesson. Not possible. No, no, no, no.

Now then. You CAN break up with someone with care and dignity which will go a long way to allowing them to recover. This means you do NOT break up with them by letter or e-mail or even by telephone. You do it IN PERSON. This means you tell them, with kindness, that you simply no longer have the feelings for them as you did in the past and it is time for both of you to move on. You allow him to ask all the questions he wants, over and over, until he no longer has any questions. (Remember, his real question will be "why" - to which there really is no answer. When you fall out of love just because life has moved you past the relationship, there is no reason - it just is. Very hard for the other person to accept.) You don't waiver, you don't hold out hope of getting back together, you don't get angry, you don't obfuscate, you don't lie, you just tell the truth.

This is the only way to cleanly break up with someone which will allow them to respect you and how you did that AND will allow them to more quickly get on with their own future.

Good luck!

This sounds kinda messed up. Ever see that movie lose a guy in 10 days? It works, make him break up with you. Dudes do that all the time, I don't see why girls can't either. It always hurts less if your the dumper instead of the dumpee. Then he won't sulk and keep calling you to try to get you back and so on.

There is no easy way to break up with someone. The best thing to do is to sit down with him and explain your reasons on why you want to break up. Let him know that you would like to continue to be friends. Be sincere and honest.
