You should be checked through, and your bags too. You show your passport at the gate in LAX. (Since Qantas is liable for any mis-checking of your passport and visa situation, even if USAir has checked it they will check it again.)

Contact US Air, if you bought the ticket with them, They will be able to advise you if they have a Baggage Agreement with Quantas. If they do, your bags will be checked through, if they do not you will be required to go to baggage claim get your luggage and check it with Quantas and go back through Security.

Also check with them about Minimum Connection Times In LAX going Domestic to International. If you have mroe then 3 hours you are pretty good.

If you dod not purchase your tickets through the Airline directly contact the service you bought the tickets though

When you check-in with USAir, ask them if you can check the bags all the way through. That way, you can just check-in at the gate in LAX. If you're still concerned, ask the agent at the USAir counter on the way to LAX if you need to check in there.

When you arrive in LA, you will have to collect your bags and go through customs.

Once you have cleared customs, ask US Airways to check your bags directly through to Philadelphia.

Have fun.
