Work ethic - they all believed in working very hard and not giving up. Not to mention, they couldn't easily go back.

People came to North America seeking religious freedom.

They had the judeo-christian ethic (and were not exactly the way the revisonist historians in hollywood depict) and did their best to model their societies after it.

People went to South America searching for gold.

You will know a tree by the fruit that it bears.
