Probably because it is someone related to nervousness or anxiety...and God only knows we women have more stress these days than most men...it's hard to juggle everything and there aren't enough hours in the day...I don't have this but my mother has Crohns and my cousin has colitis/crohns and I know a lot of women who have IBS and I think my young son 8 has it too...or at least that is what the docs say as he always has stomach problems but I thought IBS kind of was constantly going to the bathroom (diarhea) too so I don't know.

The syndrome can affect men and women of all ages, but it most often strikes the young and female. IBS generally first appears in people in their 20s to 40s, and women are roughly three times more likely than men to suffer from it.

Women with IBS seem to have more symptoms during their periods, suggesting that reproductive hormones may play a role.

"Syndrome" refers to a collection of symptoms, not just one or two.

The causes are multiple: biologic, psychologic and social factors can all contribute.
