I'm from the UK and I understand NOTHING about the American legal system. A friend who I used to talk to has been accused of serious crimes and at first she maintained she was innocent. She has since been arrested and remanded to custody in Riverside, CA. She has sinced changed her plea to guilty. It is (as far as I am aware) her first non-traffic offence. The charges are nasty and read as follows:

Count Charge Severity Description Violation Date Plea

1 PC 288A(B)(1) F Oral Cop/Under 18 years 07/09/2005 GUILTY
2 PC 288A(B)(1) F Oral Cop/Under 18 years 07/09/2005 GUILTY
3 PC 288A(B)(1) F Oral Cop/Under 18 years 07/09/2005 GUILTY
4 PC 288A(B)(1) F Oral Cop/Under 18 years 07/09/2005 GUILTY
5 PC 261.5(C) F Unlawful Intercourse W/Minor >3 Yrs Younger 07/09/2005 GUILTY

Obviously these are very serious charges and I have since re-considered my friendship with her - however we don't know the full story.
Any ideas on a likely sentence?

Also, how does time on remand count? In the UK it is taken from your sentence - so if a judge gives you 6 months and you have already served 2 on remand, you are released straight away because remand time counts as DOUBLE from your sentence.

How are sex offenders treated in US jails?

I've not ceased being friends with her but I mean I don't know what the full story is. Maybe she was told (as happens in the UK so often) that if she pleads Guilty, it is a lesser sentence than being found guilty by jury. I think she's probably innocent but I won't know till I write to her or even visit her in jail

Maybe 5 to 7 years in prison or a slap on the wrist. She will be placed on the sexual offenders list.

Oral Copulation under the age of eighteen is the first four I think, and Unlawful intercourse is pretty straight forward. 3-7?

In all probability, shes will be placed in jail and the sentence could vary of course but it is possible a 6 to 8 year sentence could be imposed.

you will possibly desire to have instructed him that he might desire to believe in God basically in case to stay away from the opportunity of going to hell (thats Pascals wager). he's looking it a faux dichotomy meaning you're implying that there are basically 2 opportunities while truly there are much extra. Pascals wager is predicated upon the concept that the two no God exists or the Christian God in specific exists. It does not account for the opportunity of -- say case in point -- the Islamic God exists wherein case you will possibly be a believer in Christianity and nonetheless land up in hell. or maybe a God exists that hates all religious believers and could basically enable athiests into heaven. Thats basically as in all probability. factor is there are limitless opportunities, so believing in 'God' does not garauntee you wont visit hell, or maybe cut back the likelyhood like Pascal implies.

She will be put on the sex offender's register, but sentence will most likely depend on the age of the minor and the difference of age between the two.

i dont know about the likely sentence but you should be incredibly careful who you talk to. I presume you met this girl over the internet - it just goes to show that you can't really get to know someone this way. Who knows what else she's lied about? Put it down to experience, put it behind you, and try not to think about the girl again.
