The city's has several nicknames.
"Crescent City" alludes to the course of the Mississippi River around and through the city;
"The Big Easy" was possibly a reference by musicians in the early 1900's to the relative ease of finding work there, but most New Orleanians attribute the term to the city being more carefree and slowed down than cities like New York (the Big Apple);
"The City that Care Forgot" refers to the outwardly easy-going, carefree nature of many of the residents.

Well, they explained the crescent shape of the river. But we have a new nickname, 'The Chocolate City.' I guess as Mecca is to the Muslims then New Orleans will be the same for African-Americans and who says racism is a one-way street.

Before the swamps surrounding the city were drained the city was forced to developer on dry land...the only dry land was stretched along the river....so the city developed in a crescent shape...

Because this area is natural high ground it did not flood during storm. this area has become known as:

"The Isle of Denial"--New Orleans residents who live on this stretch sometimes forget that 80% of the city was flooded in some capacity...sometimes we feel there is no world outside our own neighborhoods!

"Sliver on the River"--again non flooded areas..

The city is not flooded anymore and has not been for quite sometime...Come down, have a relaxed good time!

I always thought it was how the city's deviation below sea level makes a bowl shape between the river bank and the lake. But most say it's the turns in the river around the city.

The city is called the Crescent City because of its crescent shape formed because of the meandering of the Mississippi River.
